What is it with this show and sucking me back into rewatches? It's like my brain goes, "Hey, it's been three weeks! You should totally do a rewatch!"

...okay, not quite. But I do seem to wind up going back to my favorite episodes an awful lot.

Anyway, this whole post is totally just a scam to get you to post your favourite episodes in the comments, so we can squee together, and so I can have more stuff to rewatch. Unless your all-time favourite episode is Profit and Lace, I think we can find some common ground to discuss. ;)

So! What are your favourite DS9 episodes, flist/circle? Favourite characters (there are a billion to choose from)? Favourite plots? Favourite fics? Favourite unintentionally hilarious screencaps? Do tell!
eponymous_rose: (DS9)
[livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking happened! I failed quite a bit at getting stuff written this year - I think only two fics got finished and posted - but I've tried to run around and leave warm wishes in everyone's stockings I could find. ♥

Amazing things appeared in my stocking that I must share with you all, so you can join me in telling these people how awesome they are:

[livejournal.com profile] yamx wrote me an awesome Doctor Who ficlet detailing Amy and Eleven's encounter with a certain figure of historical note.
[livejournal.com profile] merfilly wrote me a pitch-perfect M*A*S*H ficlet featuring Charles and Margaret after the war.
[livejournal.com profile] cosmic_llin wrote me a spectacular Deep Space Nine ficlet that highlights two of my very favourite subjects: Kira Nerys and storms.
[livejournal.com profile] lindenharp made me a Most Excellent icon featuring Team Tardis Version Eleventy.
[livejournal.com profile] taraljc made me an assortment of fantastic TOS!Bones icons that make me want to rewatch the show right this very instant.
[livejournal.com profile] paranoidangel42 wrote me a wonderfully plausible Doctor Who/Stargate SG-1 crossover ficlet, in which Teal'c meets Eleven and awesomeness ensues.
[livejournal.com profile] tree_and_leaf wrote me a fantastic Deep Space Nine missing scene for The Siege, featuring Kira.
[livejournal.com profile] tassoss wrote me a fully-fledged and spectacularly awesome Due South fic in which Ray K. and Fraser are at the Vecchios' for Christmas, and an unexpected guest comes for dinner.
[livejournal.com profile] shinyjenni wrote me a wonderful Doctor Who ficlet in which Martha and Liz talk about the moon, and I am reminded of why I love this show so very much.
[livejournal.com profile] glinda_penguin wrote me a spectacular SG-1 ficlet (with accompanying image), in which Teal'c and Sam are on a road trip in Germany.

And there were many well-wishes that were extremely happy-making. Thank you, everyone, and happy 2011! ♥

On the topic of happy stuff, have a couple amazing Star Trek images I came across on tumblr: cut because I will likely botch the HTML and make them huge the first time )

Having apparently jinxed the free internet thing last time, I've been without internet at home ever since - but now I'm up and running!

In honor of being all settled in and such, I think I might just borrow an awesome project that [livejournal.com profile] kindkit does every now and then (with awesome results - go see!): the ficlet project!

The idea is that I make a post like this one, and the first commenter gives me one fandom (no crossovers on this one), a character or two, and a brief prompt (but please, nothing too specific or detailed). I write a quick little ficlet based on that prompt, and then the first commenter on that one gets to post another prompt. And, of course, even if you're not interested in the previous fic, you're welcome to comment with just a prompt.

Everyone's welcome to play - you don't have to be on my flist or ever have read any of my stuff. If you come across one of these posts and there's no prompt on it yet, jump in! But to give everyone a chance to play, please just limit yourselves to one prompt per round.

My restrictions: I tend not to write above PG-13, and I do prefer gen, but that doesn't mean I won't write any and all pairings - the fic just won't be particularly explicit. Other than that, prompt away! If there's an issue with your prompt, I'll let you know.

I'm limiting this to fandoms I'm most familiar with at the moment, just because this should be quick. If a fandom's not included, it doesn't mean I've fallen out of love with it. It just means I need a rewatch. ;)

Fandoms in no particular order:
Star Trek (TNG, DS9, XI)
Doctor Who (only the newest series with Eleven and Amy, please - I'm planning a Classic Who rewatch soon)
Sherlock (the new BBC mini-series)
Quantum Leap
Stargate SG-1
Legend

And... there we go! First prompt in the comments will be written.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is the Day of Not-Classic Trek that [livejournal.com profile] cosmic_llin has so awesomely organized - the idea, as I've mentioned before, is to show a little love for the quieter Trek fandoms: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise.

Timing-wise, as soon as today's [livejournal.com profile] trek_news goes live (which should be sometime in the next couple hours or so), the day's up and running! Tomorrow's [livejournal.com profile] trek_news will be posted between 10PM and midnight Mountain Time, so you've got almost 36 hours to post all your '90s Trek-related fanworks. Have fun with it - I know I will!
eponymous_rose: (Default)
[livejournal.com profile] cosmic_llin has had the fantastic idea of a Day of not-quite-Classic Trek - I'm copy-pasting from her post here, because I couldn't have said it better myself:

Seriously, you guys, I <3 the new Trek movie and TOS, but I sometimes wish, for purely selfish reasons, that there was more stuff on [info]trek_news for the 90s Trek series. I always get so excited when I see a Troi story or a batch of DS9 icons.

I think it would be cool if, on one particular day, there was suddenly a bunch of TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT stuff on there - stories, graphics, meta, vids, whatever! It would be like the Day of Classic in Doctor Who fandom, which is always awesome.

I don't know if anything like this has been done before for Trek, but would anyone want to do it with me? I propose Sunday June 20th, to give people a bit of time to get stuff together.

Is that not awesome? I'm excited already.

Also, in case you missed it on [livejournal.com profile] trek_news a while back: [livejournal.com profile] where_no_woman, the amazing Trek comm that puts the spotlight on female characters, is running a First Anniversary Ficathon for all Treks. The idea is simply that you claim a prompt and a day, and then post a fic for that prompt on that day. The prompts are everything from gen to het to femslash to crossovers, and they're definitely a lot of fun. It's a pretty relaxed ficathon, too: there are no word count limits or specific requirements. There are sign-up posts for AOS, TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, and non-specific canon. Hope to see the Trek fans on my flist give it a shot! :D

Okay, so I like making lists. Because the comment format can be a little unwieldy, I'll be trying desperately to link as much as I can for the [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti auction, by fandom, so you can track down what you'd like to request. I make no guarantees that I'll be able to keep this updated, but it's a starting point, right? I'm starting with fic because, well, it's the biggest and unwieldiest section. We'll see how this goes.

Note the first: I'm not affiliated with the mod(s) of [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti - I just want to see them do extremely well. :) All mistakes and whatnot are entirely my fault. I'm none too familiar with bandom/RPF, so if I've mucked those sections up, let me know! Likewise, if you spot an error, please point it out, and I promise I'll be appropriately shamed and fix it as soon as possible.

Note the second: This was done very quickly, based only on a brief scan of the auctions offered - please double-check before bidding. ;)

Note the third: Now too big for one post! Yikes.

Note the fourth: Official-type post in [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti with extra info/details: http://community.livejournal.com/help_haiti/5173.html

1. Yuletide! I haven't had much time to read yet, but I have found a handful of awesome fics to rec for you all.

First, I definitely have to rec the fic I received, which is The Margaret Mystique, in MASH fandom, and is an awesome little character study that jumps around between the war and the tenth anniversary of the Armistice - it does a great job of examining the relationships Margaret's had without falling into the typical fannish clichés. Definitely well worth reading!

Next, if you are at all a fan of Doctor Who and/or Torchwood and/or Lord Peter Wimsey, you must drop whatever you're doing and take an hour or two to read No Man's Land, which is a stunningly written, tightly plotted story that slips Jack Harkness, Major Wimsey, and Sergeant Bunter seamlessly into the universe of the Second Doctor serial, The War Games. Sayers fandom is chock full of brilliant writers, so my expectations were awfully high going in, but I was still completely blown away. It's been ages since I saw The War Games, and my Torchwood-ish knowledge is pretty limited, but I enjoyed this one immensely.

The Lord Peter Wimsey section in Yuletide this year has also brought The Sceptre at the Feast, which is a gorgeous character study that follows Viscount Saint-George's life, as viewed from Peter's eyes. Gherkins has always been a particular favourite of mine, and this story definitely does him justice.

I'll have more recs soon, I'm sure, given the dozens of tabs I have open. ;)

2. [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking! Since I mixed up the reveal date, I find myself with a whole bunch of fics (17!) that could probably use a brief looking-over, beta-wise. I'm usually not too bad with SPAG, so I'm mostly looking for fandom-specific glances, here, and I thought the best way to do this without giving too much away would be to poll for a bunch of fandoms, some of which I may well have written for (but I couldn't possibly comment). If you're able to beta for any of the below fandoms, just let me know by clicking the ticky-boxes, and I'll drop you a PM with details if there's a fic that could use your expert opinion - and please don't hesitate to say "No, thanks!" if you'd rather not beta, after all! The fics are all below PG-13, mostly gen, and shouldn't have any triggery content, if that's a concern. There is one fic in a fandom that I'm pretty sure will be unfamiliar to anyone but me and the recipient, which spoils the surprise, so I'll leave that one off the list and read it over myself, extra-carefully.
[Poll #1503676]
Thank you so much!

3. [livejournal.com profile] subsequent, thank you so much for the snowflake cookie yesterday! It definitely made me smile. :D

Guys, [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking is live! This is an awesome community wherein you post a letter containing your fandoms and general fic likes/dislikes, and then your "stocking" is posted, and friends and random passersby drop fics and icons and recs and graphics and general well-wishes into the comments, which are unscreened at Christmas! It's immensely fun (and while it's based around Christmas, like Yuletide, there's no expectation for the fics/icons/whatnot to be Christmas-related, of course), and a fantastic way to make new friends and generally get feel-good vibes of awesomeness. I really, really encourage you guys to sign up - I love trying to fill as many stockings as possible. And when you do sign up, let me know so I can be all sneaky and Santa-like!

My stocking is hereabouts this year.

THE FANFICTION LOVE MEME

Cool cool. In other news, it's December! I'm gonna try to do an advent calendar thing, with mini-picspams and/or ficlets and/or uploads of cool stuff every day. We'll see if this works!

On that note, prompt me - just a fandom, a character, and a word would be awesome! ♥ I seem to be really big into SG-1 right now, and I just rewatched the Trek movie, so those are the two fandoms whose prompts I'd be most likely to jump all over, but I could definitely wind up grabbing something from another fandom.

who_remix!

I had to drop out of [livejournal.com profile] who_remix close to the last minute, and I managed to totally forget that this meant I would still be getting a fic of my own remixed! Of course, my guilt over this is totally assuaged by the awesome.

Dispatches From Abroad (The Past is Another Country Mix) is a fantastic remix of Foreign Correspondence (though it stands alone really well), which was one of my favourite things to come out of those months of posting fics every day. I'm so happy with the way my remixer has played with the premise - the Doctor leaving messages throughout time and space for Susan - and changed it up so that it lends a nice little glimpse into the Doctor (all of him). There are so many references to obscure bits of novel/comic/audio canon that I really, really hope said remixer is on my flist already, because lo, there was much happy flailing. ♥ Do check it out!
eponymous_rose: (DW | TARDIS | Old School Funky Planet)
Stolen from large chunks of the flist:

the fanficcers love meme, continued

What can I say? I'm a sucker for pretty colours.

I was all proud of myself for going to bed early, but I wound up staying awake until 5AM trying to devise a Rube Goldberg machine based on the bit of my heater that whirrs inexplicably every few minutes. Clearly this takes precedence over sleep!
eponymous_rose: (DW | Two | Fanfic)
Give me one of my own stories, and a timestamp sometime in the future after the end of the story, or sometime in the past before the story started, and I'll write you at least a hundred words of what happened then, whether it's five minutes before the story started or ten years in the future.

Might not appear until after [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking, but ooh! This sounds interesting. It's like fanfic for a fanfic.

Fic recs?

Dec. 28th, 2008 09:59 pm
eponymous_rose: (TOS | Old School)
TOS fandom is a very, very confusing place - as near as I can tell, it hasn't exactly settled down on LJ at all, and much of the fanfic is in print zines rather than online. Fanfiction.net still seems to be the easiest place to find fic, which is, um, not necessarily ideal. While I have been gleefully devouring the Orion Archives, I thought I'd just issue a bit of a plea, because I know some of the flist (including a few new arrivals thanks to that crazy Amok Time recap I did - hello!) are much better acquainted with this fandom than I am.

I'll read any and all pairings, but I'm a gen fangirl at heart, and quite possibly my favourite thing ever is action/adventure-type stuff featuring the Big Three. Any recommendations? Archives I've managed to miss?

Thanks very much! :D
eponymous_rose: (DW | Seven | Ace | Into the Sunset)
There've been lots of posts about fandom in general recently, following this amazing article, and [livejournal.com profile] cryptictac has set up a Fannish Appreciation Meme to, you know, remind us why we're here. And you know how I love a meme.

The Fandom Appreciation Meme: My Thread

Honestly, it's just so amazing to sit back and really think about what we're doing here; I know I'm not exactly the most sociable person, but I was loads worse when I first joined LJ just over a year ago. Chatting about the shows we love, the books we read, the things we do and think and dream - well, it all seems perfectly natural, doesn't it? It's the convention experience every time you log on, only you wind up talking about silly things and serious things and things that have nothing to do with anything. It's a different world in here, and it's easy to forget all the amazing things that come with it. Friendship half a world apart, for one.

I remember, when I was about thirteen, calling an e-mail correspondent a "friend" and getting a strange, almost scandalized look from my mom. "But you've never met her!" Come to think of it, I've never actually met a single one of the 158 people on my flist, but I have stayed up until four AM debating the edibility of various actors, pitching terrifyingly bizarre new TV series that are SURELY BRILLIANT and just waiting for the right audience, and generally discussing the things that matter most in life. Friends in the 'real world' who'll sit down and chat with me until the wee small hours about nothing in particular? I can count them on the fingers of one hand, and I call myself lucky to have that many.

And it's not just the friends I've made that get me all gleeful; it's the ones I've just met, the ones I haven't had a chance to get to know yet who have precisely one fandom in common with me. It's a starting point; sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. But that's half the fun, isn't it?

To sum up: ♥ you all.
eponymous_rose: (TOS | Rifftrax | Pointless Enterprise)
(The best part of wandering into a well-established fandom is gleefully discovering all the things that everyone else has seen a million times before and being obnoxiously enthusiastic about them.)

A snippet from the TOS book I've been reading:

"Here we are," Uhura said, and dropped another tape in the read slot, hit the control. For a second nothing seemed to be happening on the stage. Then a peculiar grinding, wheezing sound began to fill the air. On the platform there slowly faded into existence a tall blue rectangular structure with doors in it, and a flashing white light on top, and what appeared to be the English words "Police Public Call Box" blazoned on the front panel above the doors.

The book is My Enemy, My Ally by Diane Duane, and I am all asquee. What can I say?

Psst - It's your last chance to get yourself a Christmas card from me! I believe there are eighteen names on the list so far (I'll check 'em twice, don't worry), and I have several cards left that are looking for a good home!

(I did forget to mention something in my little wishlist section - fanart. I love fanart! Any and all fandoms, any and all characters.)
eponymous_rose: (DW | TARDIS | Old School Funky Planet)
Back in the day, I started off a valiant attempt to watch all of Who (yes, even the reconstructions) in order from start to finish. Needless to say, I've jumped around a lot in the process, and am presently stuck somewhere in the middle of The Dalek Masterplan. Possibly because I can't remember what episode I left off on. How embarrassing.

But then I was reminded of another valiant thought of valiant...ness that emerged at some point - watching all of Who in chronological order. Oh, yes. I'd have to impose some sort of arbitrary ordering system - say, using this website - lest I make my head explode. And, I suppose, I'd just be watching episodes in the order in which the earliest chronological event takes place (i.e. watching "Runaway Bride" early on due to that scene with the creation of the Earth). But still! It's arbitrary and weird and will totally confuse me w.r.t. character development and such, but I think I've got enough of a handle on these folks to be able to work through it. And it would be so awesome.

The trickiest part? I'd also like to confuse myself further by throwing in the spinoffs/novels/audios/comics as well. As many as possible, anyway. Oooh, that's daring.

[Poll #1263353]

It would be a fun project and I would post my Highly Skientific Findings and it would also be really amusing to go through the 20th and 21st centuries and see what the poor people on Earth have to deal with.

THE CHARACTER RATING MEME

(This is a link. I mention it because it took me forever to figure that one out.)

Why not? Comment with your thread, if I haven't found you yet! :D
eponymous_rose: (Default)
(Apologies for the impromptu hiatus - wound up taking a bit of a holiday from the intarwebs, with the exception of various and sundry fannish requirements. No bad stuff going on! Very good stuff on the whole, spending time with family + cats and reading and playing piano and doing some of that crazy writing thing every now and then. Just needed to take a bit of a step back, apparently.)

First, a quick pimp: [livejournal.com profile] tardis_view has 103 members! That's craziness! For those of you who've not heard me go on about this yet, it's a comm in which you can give people tours of various localities around the world. Thus! Join the community, and you've got a TARDIS of your very own, complete with tour guides wherever you might wind up. There's a gorgeous tour of The Cloisters in NYC, as well as a beautiful log of a trip to Gambia. Come on in and start travelling!

Pimp number two: [livejournal.com profile] livelongnmarry ends at midnight Pacific time, which is in about 10 hours. It's your last chance to buy up all the great stuff around! Last I checked, the comm had raised over $30,000 for marriage equality. SO COOL.

I've offered:
- 5 lots of 1,000,000 NP, the currency in Neopets, which is a guilty pleasure of mine and features about a billion online games, such random things as a stock market and auctions and trading, and some adorable online pets to pamper. For the purpose of comparison, you get... 250 NP? 500? when you create a new account. This is quite a lot more to start out with! So far, four of the lots are going for $20 each, and one is going for $25.

- 1 fic by request, with several fandoms to choose from, including Doctor Who (Classic or New series), House MD, Sherlock Holmes, Man from U.N.C.L.E., Sapphire and Steel, The Prisoner, The West Wing, Danger Man, The Sarah Jane Adventures, The X-Files, or any combination of the above. [livejournal.com profile] elyssadc is awesomely winning this one with a $30 bid. :D

- 10 ficlets by request, in which you give me at least twenty prompts, and I fill at least ten of them over August. Fandoms are the same as the above. [livejournal.com profile] livii is awesomely winning this one with a $20 bid. :D

Last you'll hear of me on that score, until the fics get posted. Go out and bid!

(Also - won the ebay lot of 15 Lord Peter Wimsey novels, which should apparently arrive Friday - Mondayish, which is right smack in the middle of my 7 straight eleven-hour shifts of doom! This is awesome timing, I think.)
eponymous_rose: (DW | Four | Romana | But that's crazy ta)
This should be the last, but the return of the daily fics is too well-timed to resist.

For [livejournal.com profile] livelongnmarry, I've offered up some of the daily fics - the idea is that you give me a list of at least 20 prompts (could be wild and wacky or totally dark or with peculiar pairings), and I'll write at least 10 of them over the month of August as my daily fics. You know me - I love getting prompts, but it seems to take me forever to act on any of them. Here's your chance to make me dance like the puppet I am! Ever wanted more exciting Borusa/Frobisher interaction? How about crossovers? Number Six duking it out with the Sixth Doctor? Bidding's started at $5.

(Hush, in another life I was a successful businessperson.)

In other news, the Liz/Barbara fic is Way Too Dark (to the point of being dull) and needs a rewrite, curses. Should make an appearance sometime soon!
eponymous_rose: (DW | Ian | DANCE!)
First, the [livejournal.com profile] livelongnmarry news! You guys, [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis has a post here, offering up fanfic. I make special note of this because she's the one who wrote the awesome remix for [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k's super-awesome "The Boy Who Killed Time", and I know lots of you are fans. GO BID.

My fic is going for $25 at present (you're amazing, [livejournal.com profile] livii!) and there have been bids on all five of my Neopets lots here (gold stars to [livejournal.com profile] mimiheart, [livejournal.com profile] misura, and especially to [livejournal.com profile] settiai!). That's $100 raised so far! I really do encourage you guys to offer up your services, or bid, or both! There's some truly amazing stuff up there.

In other fannish news, [livejournal.com profile] tardis_view has reached 65 members! Everyone seems extremely nice, and I really am looking forward to giving folks a tour of my city. Half the fun is looking at your own home in a different light, seeing all the little things you'd love to show off. Thanks to everyone who joined, and everyone who pimped it out! Looks like it could definitely be a success.

And now, a meme stolen from [livejournal.com profile] jb_wolfsies. I can't promise an answer to all of the questions, but I'll do my best!

Pick a fandom (or two) and I'll tell you:

1. The first character I fell in love with.
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now.
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't.
4. The character I love that everyone else hates.
5. The character I used to love but don't any longer.
6. The character I would shag anytime.
7. The character I'd want to be like.
8. The character I'd slap.
9. A pairing that I love.
10. A pairing that I hate.

Edit: Because a list of my fandoms might help: Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes, The Avengers, Dead Like Me, Jeeves and Wooster, Man from UNCLE, Sapphire and Steel, Sarah Jane Adventures, The Prisoner, Twin Peaks, X-Files, The West Wing, House, Danger Man, etc. etc. etc.
