(On the hunt for recs, I just stumbled across my Yuletide recipient and another reviewer discussing the fic I wrote in thousands of words of in-depth meta. I may have flailed quite a lot, and I kinda feel like I can pack up and go home, because that right there is everything I ever wanted as a fic-writer. ♥)

Yuletide Madness has occurred, and I was absolutely boggled to find three fics waiting for me - so exciting! They are all three of them gorgeous little stories that deserve lots and lots of love:

First, in DS9 fandom, Past Lives and Propaganda is hilarious(ly meta), and will ensure that you never look at the first couple seasons of TNG the same way again. Kira helps Jadzia go through Curzon's old things.

In drabble-sized form, there's Snowflakes - in my Mass Effect request, I'd asked for something featuring the characters with less screen time, and this drabble delivers! Zaeed and Gardner share a drink, and it's fantastic to see how much of a rapport can be built in 100 words alone.

Finally, also in DS9 fandom, there's As Was Intended, which is beautifully written and is so full of awesomeness that I never realized I'd always wanted to see in the show. Jadzia sits down for coffee with Garak.

All in all, I feel ridiculously lucky this Yuletidely season, and I hope I can repay some of that kindness via [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking this year. ♥

Yuletide!

(I love that our family gathered round to watch a Christmas movie this afternoon, and wound up watching Jurassic Park instead. New tradition? I think so!)

First, I absolutely have to flail at you all about my excellent Yuletide gift in the DS9 fandom, Discretion, which is a Morn-centric fic (!!!) that manages to hit that delicate balance between Morn's offscreen loquaciousness and onscreen silence. It's got fantastic glimpses at all of our heroes, gives Morn's gossipy persona a little depth, and hey, anything that has Morn and Worf bonding is fantastic by me. Highly recommended! Go tell the mysterious anon how awesome they are. ♥

I've only had the time to flick through a few more fics, and haven't even made it through all the DS9 stories so far (was working from my phone, so the comments I left are probably typo-cluttered, eep), and here are my preliminary recs:

The Life That Is Waiting is stunning - it's Kasidy-centric, set post-series, and it's absolutely gorgeous. It's a quick read, but trust me, you'll want to take the time to savor this one. So many amazing appearances by so many amazing characters.

One Ordinary Week, With Party Hats is really fun! It's a marvelous little slice-of-life touching on pretty much everyone, with the underlying plot of Julian trying to throw Garak a surprise birthday party.

Son of a Preacher Man, on top of having a fantastically apt title, is a really great Jake/Nog piece that builds a relationship between them in little glimpses throughout the series, from the pilot to post-"Empok Nor".

I'm sure I'll have another post to come soon!

Edit: I forgot! If you manage to guess which fic I wrote before the reveal, I'll write you a drabble. I just managed one fic this year, and it's probably sorta obvious.

Yuletide reveal! I was lucky enough to get to write in one of my favourite fandoms this year, for [livejournal.com profile] dress_fic, whose request was awesome and sparked a lot of fun ideas. Beta-wise, many thanks to [personal profile] velvetmouse, who gave several rounds of fantabulous feedback and much-needed corrections - in spite of technical difficulties, no less. ♥

You can read this fic at AO3 as well.

Title: And When the Night Is New

1. Yuletide! I haven't had much time to read yet, but I have found a handful of awesome fics to rec for you all.

First, I definitely have to rec the fic I received, which is The Margaret Mystique, in MASH fandom, and is an awesome little character study that jumps around between the war and the tenth anniversary of the Armistice - it does a great job of examining the relationships Margaret's had without falling into the typical fannish clichés. Definitely well worth reading!

Next, if you are at all a fan of Doctor Who and/or Torchwood and/or Lord Peter Wimsey, you must drop whatever you're doing and take an hour or two to read No Man's Land, which is a stunningly written, tightly plotted story that slips Jack Harkness, Major Wimsey, and Sergeant Bunter seamlessly into the universe of the Second Doctor serial, The War Games. Sayers fandom is chock full of brilliant writers, so my expectations were awfully high going in, but I was still completely blown away. It's been ages since I saw The War Games, and my Torchwood-ish knowledge is pretty limited, but I enjoyed this one immensely.

The Lord Peter Wimsey section in Yuletide this year has also brought The Sceptre at the Feast, which is a gorgeous character study that follows Viscount Saint-George's life, as viewed from Peter's eyes. Gherkins has always been a particular favourite of mine, and this story definitely does him justice.

I'll have more recs soon, I'm sure, given the dozens of tabs I have open. ;)

2. [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking! Since I mixed up the reveal date, I find myself with a whole bunch of fics (17!) that could probably use a brief looking-over, beta-wise. I'm usually not too bad with SPAG, so I'm mostly looking for fandom-specific glances, here, and I thought the best way to do this without giving too much away would be to poll for a bunch of fandoms, some of which I may well have written for (but I couldn't possibly comment). If you're able to beta for any of the below fandoms, just let me know by clicking the ticky-boxes, and I'll drop you a PM with details if there's a fic that could use your expert opinion - and please don't hesitate to say "No, thanks!" if you'd rather not beta, after all! The fics are all below PG-13, mostly gen, and shouldn't have any triggery content, if that's a concern. There is one fic in a fandom that I'm pretty sure will be unfamiliar to anyone but me and the recipient, which spoils the surprise, so I'll leave that one off the list and read it over myself, extra-carefully.
[Poll #1503676]
Thank you so much!

3. [livejournal.com profile] subsequent, thank you so much for the snowflake cookie yesterday! It definitely made me smile. :D

Whoops.

So my Yuletide signup might just take forever this year. I'm terrible at coming up with prompts - I always want to come up with something particularly awesome and it doesn't help that my mind invariably goes blank when you put an empty form in front of it. And when I do finally come up with a viable prompt, I go "Hmmm, well, actually..." and write 5,000 words of fic for it. Apparently. So far there's just the one time, but it might become a habit.

Discuss! How do you awesome people come up with prompts for ficathons? Do you plan them out beforehand, or are you seized by inspiration at the last minute? And, on a related note, what do you like seeing in a ficathon prompt? Have you ever been stuck with too much detail, or too little?

Yuletide signups are open!

For you folks who are new to this, or may possibly have just never paid much attention to the whole thing, it's basically a small/tiny/nonexistent-fandoms fic exchange (the name refers to the time of year it's held over - there's no requirement or expectation for you to write a Christmas fic or anything!). And it's massive. We're talking thousands of fandoms, here. Where else can your more obscure fannish loves find a willing audience - and someone eager to write you a fic in return?

Go forth and sign up!

Eee, this time already! I am a long-time lurker/reader, first-time participant in Yuletide, so this is very much on the exciting side for me. :D

Details under the cut, etc. etc. )
