Back in the day, I started off a valiant attempt to watch all of Who (yes, even the reconstructions) in order from start to finish. Needless to say, I've jumped around a lot in the process, and am presently stuck somewhere in the middle of The Dalek Masterplan. Possibly because I can't remember what episode I left off on. How embarrassing.
But then I was reminded of another valiant thought of valiant...ness that emerged at some point - watching all of Who in chronological order. Oh, yes. I'd have to impose some sort of arbitrary ordering system - say, using this website - lest I make my head explode. And, I suppose, I'd just be watching episodes in the order in which the earliest chronological event takes place (i.e. watching "Runaway Bride" early on due to that scene with the creation of the Earth). But still! It's arbitrary and weird and will totally confuse me w.r.t. character development and such, but I think I've got enough of a handle on these folks to be able to work through it. And it would be so awesome.
The trickiest part? I'd also like to confuse myself further by throwing in the spinoffs/novels/audios/comics as well. As many as possible, anyway. Oooh, that's daring.

It would be a fun project and I would post my Highly Skientific Findings and it would also be really amusing to go through the 20th and 21st centuries and see what the poor people on Earth have to deal with.

Date: 2008-09-20 03:35 am (UTC)Ooh, WITH spinoffs. A list, no less! That may be slightly beyond my capabilities, after all. I'm looking at creating a televised-only list (and it is coming very well so far!). So much shininess!

Date: 2008-09-19 11:55 pm (UTC)The spin-off media is best enjoyed however you want, really. I love the fact that I still have A LOT of Big Finish audio plays still to listen to or New Adventures/Eighth Doctor Adventures books to read - it's a nice feeling knowing that you still have some new Doctor Who stories to experience whenever you want.

Date: 2008-09-20 03:39 am (UTC)I don't think it's really so much the desire to watch the whole thing, strictly adhering to this order, as it is a desire to watch some totally random serials without having to resort to, well, a Randomiser. ;) It's a fun project, anyway! I will probably just stick to the televised stuff, though. I value what little sanity I've got left!

Date: 2008-09-20 12:21 am (UTC)Besides, what about stories that don't take place at any specified/discernable time? What about stories (i.e. Mawdryn Undead) that take place at two times at once? What about the five different "end of the universe"s that Who's come up with over the years? WHAT ABOUT UNIT DATING. THINK OF THE UNIT DATING.
Ahem. I don't mean to sound so discouraging, and like I said I'll happily cheer you on if that's what you want to do, but I can't wrap my mind around the concept of how one would do that.
But, on the other hand, I do want to see your skientiffic findings. What a quandary.

Date: 2008-09-20 03:43 am (UTC)OR, and this is more likely, I'll just copy out the order from the site linked up there (and the other one, which I think/hope includes s3 and s4 of the new series). I will let that hard-working person and/or persons come up with all the clever explanations for this, that, and the other thing, and when people ask about the order I can feel totally inculpable. Heehee.
(Basically, it's a starting point - it's not the be-all and end-all of chronologies. But, you know, ballpark figures. It's all in the name of
skiencefun!)I have come across a couple of serials that the website person appears to have given up on dating - like "The Edge of Destruction", that's a tough one. I think I'll just watch those nebulous serials right after whichever one comes before them in production order.

Date: 2008-09-20 04:05 am (UTC)Storm Warning
Sword of Orion
The Stones of Venice
Minuet in Hell
Invaders from Mars
The Chimes of Midnight (I absolutely adore this one like you wouldn't believe)
Seasons of Fear
Embrace the Darkness
The Time of the Daleks
Neverland
Zagreus (this one stars everybody but the kitchen sink, and I mean everybody)
Scherzo
The Creed of the Kromon
The Natural History of Fear (another amazing one)
The Twilight Kingdom
Faith Stealer
The Last
Caerdroia (absolutely brilliant)
The Next Life
Terror Firma
Scaredy Cat
Other Lives
Time Works
Something Inside
Memory Lane
Absolution
The Girl Who Never Was
And that's that set of adventures! In a totally separate set of audios (these ones are an hour long, as opposed to the above, which tend to clock in a two hours), we've got:
Blood of the Daleks (2-parter)
Horror of Glam Rock
Immortal Beloved
Phobos
No More Lies
Human Resources (2-parter)
Dead London
Max Warp
Brave New Town
The Skull of Sobek
Grand Theft Cosmos
The Zygon Who Fell to Earth
Sisters of the Flame
Vengeance of Morbius
There you go! Hope that's what you've been looking for. :D

Date: 2008-09-20 04:11 am (UTC)It's probably not the sort of Epic Project I'll ever finish, but it is a really nice way to get a feel for the sheer number of serials involved - a kind of flyover history of the Whoniverse. Also, it gives me a chance to rewatch a bunch of the historicals in a row, as I do love them so.
(As mentioned above, though, it's also a sort of Substitute Randomiser that saves me the trouble of coming up with some still more arcane way of watching lots of random Who. Hee!)

Date: 2008-09-20 04:10 pm (UTC)be wonderfully crazy enoughbe motivated to do it. ...also, I'd leave out the auxiliary media, at least for the first time around. It's just so sprawling, you'll spend all your time prepping and never even get to the rewatch. In it's honor, my Who icon which seems to take place the earliest of the ones with a clear setting.
