For those of you who aren't on tumblr and may have missed it, this fantasy AU DS9 art is fantastically fantastic.

I haven't had much of a chance yet to go through Festivids (so much awesome!), but here's one rec, just 'cause:

Outside the Box. It's a vid of Maru the cat. Yes, Maru, the ridiculously adorable cat of YouTube fame. It involves epic slow-mo and the tragic drama of Maru's quest for the perfect box. It's hilarious, and also adorable.

(On the hunt for recs, I just stumbled across my Yuletide recipient and another reviewer discussing the fic I wrote in thousands of words of in-depth meta. I may have flailed quite a lot, and I kinda feel like I can pack up and go home, because that right there is everything I ever wanted as a fic-writer. ♥)

Yuletide Madness has occurred, and I was absolutely boggled to find three fics waiting for me - so exciting! They are all three of them gorgeous little stories that deserve lots and lots of love:

First, in DS9 fandom, Past Lives and Propaganda is hilarious(ly meta), and will ensure that you never look at the first couple seasons of TNG the same way again. Kira helps Jadzia go through Curzon's old things.

In drabble-sized form, there's Snowflakes - in my Mass Effect request, I'd asked for something featuring the characters with less screen time, and this drabble delivers! Zaeed and Gardner share a drink, and it's fantastic to see how much of a rapport can be built in 100 words alone.

Finally, also in DS9 fandom, there's As Was Intended, which is beautifully written and is so full of awesomeness that I never realized I'd always wanted to see in the show. Jadzia sits down for coffee with Garak.

All in all, I feel ridiculously lucky this Yuletidely season, and I hope I can repay some of that kindness via [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking this year. ♥

(I love that our family gathered round to watch a Christmas movie this afternoon, and wound up watching Jurassic Park instead. New tradition? I think so!)

First, I absolutely have to flail at you all about my excellent Yuletide gift in the DS9 fandom, Discretion, which is a Morn-centric fic (!!!) that manages to hit that delicate balance between Morn's offscreen loquaciousness and onscreen silence. It's got fantastic glimpses at all of our heroes, gives Morn's gossipy persona a little depth, and hey, anything that has Morn and Worf bonding is fantastic by me. Highly recommended! Go tell the mysterious anon how awesome they are. ♥

I've only had the time to flick through a few more fics, and haven't even made it through all the DS9 stories so far (was working from my phone, so the comments I left are probably typo-cluttered, eep), and here are my preliminary recs:

The Life That Is Waiting is stunning - it's Kasidy-centric, set post-series, and it's absolutely gorgeous. It's a quick read, but trust me, you'll want to take the time to savor this one. So many amazing appearances by so many amazing characters.

One Ordinary Week, With Party Hats is really fun! It's a marvelous little slice-of-life touching on pretty much everyone, with the underlying plot of Julian trying to throw Garak a surprise birthday party.

Son of a Preacher Man, on top of having a fantastically apt title, is a really great Jake/Nog piece that builds a relationship between them in little glimpses throughout the series, from the pilot to post-"Empok Nor".

I'm sure I'll have another post to come soon!

Edit: I forgot! If you manage to guess which fic I wrote before the reveal, I'll write you a drabble. I just managed one fic this year, and it's probably sorta obvious.

Love Post!

Why am I engaging this misogynist circle-jerk on reddit? Fun as it is to gape in awe at all the Poor Oppressed Menfolk comments (I think my favourite was along the lines of "We've been raised by a misandrist generation, what do you expect?"), I really shouldn't be trying to school these people. I am relieved that the top-level comment on the post is calling people out, but the replies are just cringe-inducing. Who knew that a website populated mainly by (and I'm generalizing a lot, here) socially awkward gamers with little to no experience around or respect for women could be so misogynistic?

(This has been another episode of "[personal profile] eponymous_rose Discovers Water Is Wet". Also, I just got called a "feminist harpy", which made me giggle.)

I think it's time for a love post. Anyone have any fic/vid/music/whatever recs centered on awesome ladies being awesome? I could use a chaser for this mess.

Oh! I should say that I am halfway through [personal profile] st_aurafina's amazing The Persistence of Memory, which is a Emma Frost/Moira McTaggert fic of amazingness. I didn't particularly like X-Men: First Class despite adoring the verse in general, but this wonderful spy AU is doing a lot to get me excited about X-Men again. Do check it out!

[livejournal.com profile] agapi42 recced this fic at this week's [livejournal.com profile] ds9_rewatch, and I couldn't go on without linking it here:

Fairy Tales in Deep Space by airandangels (Garak/Bashir, G). It's inspired by that excellent scene in the show where Bashir tells Garak the story of the boy who cried wolf, and Garak promptly reinterprets the moral to mean "never tell the same lie twice". In this fic, Bashir makes it a regular experiment to tell Garak various fairy tales, and have him guess the moral of the story for each. I'm generally not a fan of script format, but it works brilliantly here, and the dialogue is just fantastically funny. Do check it out, if you haven't already!

Random sample of the awesomeness:

JB: In time, the king, too, passed away, and the queen ruled as regent until Snow White should come of age.

EG: Why did he die?

JB: The story doesn't say. It's not important.

EG: It sounds enormously important! Was it a natural death? Had he many enemies?

JB: Look, is the story called 'Political Assassination in Fairyland'? No, it's not.

Mass Effect: Interregnum by The Naked Pen.

So, first thing about this fic: it's, uh, 250,000 words long (including the separate one-shot story set in the same universe). It's also in-progress, although the current story arc has just concluded with the latest chapter. The fact that I've now read it twice in its entirety should be a bit of an endorsement, right there.

It's a genfic (the T rating is for f-bombs and violence, about on par with the game itself), and as the title suggests, it takes place in the two-year gap between ME and ME2, following everyone's favorite turian ex-cop around Omega. And while it starts as a pretty light accounting of Garrus's wacky misadventures as he accidentally recruits the galaxy's least professional vigilante squad (complete with somewhat over-the-top noirish monologues), the latest couple story arcs have taken a turn for the incredibly dark that have made the whole fic go from "mildly entertaining with good action scenes" to "holy crap this is awesome... with good action scenes".

I am extremely impressed that a fic of this length has managed to have such organic and gradual character arcs that you can transition seamlessly from laugh-out-loud hilarious moments (the horrors of elcor karaoke, the most unfortunately named starship in the universe, the mental picture of a salarian wearing blue jeans, the gigavolus, and oh, the banter) to absolutely devastating developments serving to remind you that you know exactly how this story's going to end, and that it definitely isn't going to be happily ever after. It's also taking a huge chance in that it's essentially an entire fic about OCs, with the exception of Garrus, but the original characters are all entertaining and extremely memorable, to the point where I can't read other fics speculating about Garrus's squad without thinking of these versions. And I am such a sucker for a well-written action scene. Always.

Anyway. If you're looking for a long, action-packed read that digs into Garrus's character and morality (especially dealing with the transition from Shepard's black-and-white situations to Omega's infinite shades of grey), you could do a lot worse than this story. It's a great read.

So they've been talking about building a large apartment complex in the vacant lot right outside my window, and they finally started the pile-driving this morning. It is a little alarming to wake up at 6:00AM to find the room shaking with every BANG. I'm starting to hope we get a very early winter, if only so this project can be put on hold for a few months. Until then, I guess I'll have to do the early-to-bed, early-to-rise thing. They even do construction on Saturday mornings here.

Mind you, it is pretty fun to watch. It's like, oh, how are we ever going to get these massive supports into the ground? I know! A giant automatic hammer!

After chatting with [livejournal.com profile] agapi42 last night, I was reminded that I still haven't listened to the Gallifrey series of Big Finish audios (well, I have, but I forget where I left off and have no recollection of the ones I did listen to). Time to remedy that! Listened to 1x01 as I worked this morning and was reminded of my undying love for Romana. And Leela. And, well, everyone involved. Space politics with plenty of snark and awesome ladies in charge is one of my favourite things ever, so I think I'll be enjoying this series a lot.

And now for a couple of random fic recs:

A Country of Smaller Wars by [livejournal.com profile] alibi_factory (Gallifrey; Romana/Narvin; R). Okay, so I haven't listened to the Gallifrey audios, but I've gathered up enough plot via fannish osmosis and Wikipedia to follow, and this is just amazing. If you're in the fandom and have been craving 23,000 words of pure unadulterated heartbreaking brilliance, this is for you.

Sanity Will Be Graded on a Curve by [livejournal.com profile] b1uemorpho (M*A*S*H; T). A fantastically written look at the 4077th from the point of view of a terrified new recruit. It's excellent, go read.

Bit of downtime research-wise, so! I got the Kasumi and Shadow Broker downloadable missions, and played through both. SO COOL. Semi-spoilery vague ramblings follow:

The Kasumi one was incredibly entertaining - yes, yes, what ME2 was really missing was a wacky heist mission. With hilarious commentary and a little black dress. Kasumi's awesome. I futzed around in the vault way longer than I had to, just to hear her little cutting remarks.

The Shadow Broker one? Amazing! Love that Liara gets this whole epic character arc, and her banter with Shepard was golden. Also, and I cannot stress this enough, HIGH-SPEED CHASE IN FLYING CARS. Yes, more of that in ME3, please. "What kind of weapons does this thing have?" "It's a taxi. It has a fare meter." Also: "Truck!" "I know." "TRUCK!" "I KNOW!" They are so hilariously panicky and snarky in that whole scene. The crazy angles of the fight on the ship were really disorienting, which kinda worked well. I'm getting super-reliant on the Magical Radar Button, though - I would've been lost for ages otherwise.

Getting access to all that extra personal info/chatroom logs/etc. about the squad at the end was awesome, too. Plenty of angst to go around, but lots of hilariousness, too. Of course Legion is a hardcore gamer. And Grunt's search history cracked me up. "dinosaurs" and "sharks". Yes, Grunt. Earth is pretty awesome. And Jack, well, of course she'd get kicked out of every message board there is for violating TOS. "bypassing worksafe filters". Oh, Jack.

Anyway. The Shadow Broker mission in particular was really, really good character-wise and continuity-wise. If this is a sign of things to come in ME3, it'll be awesome. AND MORE FLYING CARS PLEASE.

To sum up, here is a really nifty and well-edited fanvid that shows off how pretty this game is: You're the Conversation. Nice to see something more contemplative and character-based - it's hard to do a Shepard-centric fanvid, since everyone plays her (or him) a bit differently, but this one gets right to the core of the character. Cool song choice, too.

Going off to bed early with a good book in prep for my first exam tomorrow, but before that! Have some awesomeness that has popped up on my flist/radar lately:

Secret Agent is an awesome, awesome women-of-Trek vid by [livejournal.com profile] cosmic_llin. All the ladies! ♥ This one makes me want to go back and rewatch allll the series right from the start.

Families is a spectacular look at Kira Nerys and her many different kinds of family post-series, by [livejournal.com profile] sophia_gratia. The whole the-families-you-make vibe is one of my favourite things about DS9, and it comes across so very well here.

Babylon 5-wise:
[Probably NSFW]This super-pretty drawing of Delenn by [livejournal.com profile] rivendellrose! Minbari anatomy! So cool.

And a much older fic (the rec I found was from 2004) I came across quite by accident and have been re-reading ever since: Skuka, Holod i Granit by [livejournal.com profile] mazily. It's Marcus/Ivanova, which really isn't a pairing I'd generally seek out, but my goodness, it has the most perfectly written Ivanova I have ever encountered. The fic is equal parts bleak and darkly hilarious, which is fitting. The daydream sequence is pure gold.

Oh and also! [personal profile] curuchamion wrote me Mundane, which is a picture-perfect little Legend fic that all, uh, five of you who have ever watched the series should go check out. ♥
eponymous_rose: (DW | Liz | Brig)
As a tribute, [personal profile] calapine has posted an excellent pictorial guide to The Many Brigadiers of Nicholas Courtney. ♥ Awww.
eponymous_rose: (DLM | Mason)
I had a chance to watch a few more vids, and here are some of my favourites:

Dead Like Me
There Is a Boy Who Never Goes Out (Mason! This makes me remember the show so fondly.)

Black Horse and the Cherry Tree (Daisy! I am waaay to happy to see a Daisy vid, and this one is really, really well done. ♥)

Homicide: Life on the Street
Runaway (Homicide is one of my all-time favourite TV shows, and Meldrick Lewis is one of my favourite characters. So much love!)

How I Met Your Mother
Friends (Both HIMYM and Flight of the Conchords are guaranteed to make me happy in my face. Putting them together? Double happy!)

Pulp Fiction
Brand New Key (Short but awesome vid featuring the ladies of Pulp Fiction! Also, it's Pulp Fiction, so you can guess that even a short vid is likely to have sex, violence, and drugs. Just so you know.)

Rizzoli & Isles
Skinny Genes (ADORABLE. Rizzoli and Isles being amazing.)
eponymous_rose: (DS9)
Festivids has gone live! There is a lot of awesomeness there, but I've got one rec I just had to make before plunging back in and exploring some more:

Who Needs Enemies - it's DS9, with a focus on Bashir, Sloan, and Garak. DS9 did a lot of really nifty spy stuff, and this reflects it at its best - it's stylish and menacing and just the right level of paranoid, and it's so well put together. Check it out!

(because moving is complicated and fandom is fun)

Lots of good stuff out in the last couple of days!

DS9-wise, [livejournal.com profile] isiscaughey has a lovely Odo/Kira picspam (watch out - spoilers through season seven). ♥

Also DS9-wise, [livejournal.com profile] settiai posted a Winn Adami video called I Can't Hear the Music, which is definitely worth checking out! (again, spoilers through the entire show)

AOS-wise, [livejournal.com profile] loneraven has a fantastic Uhura genfic that plays with language: Speech.
eponymous_rose: (Default)
Since I know a lot of my flist has been getting into DS9 lately (if you haven't, I have an intro to the show here, and if you're on my flist, this post may be relevant to your interests), I thought I'd put together a rec list of Deep Space Nine fics.

(Okay, so my motives aren't entirely altruistic - in hunting for additions to this list, I found a bunch of fics that I hadn't read before, which is always a good thing.)

Almost 90 fic recs under the cut. What? I like making lists. )

So... yes! Give me your favourite recs to add to the list! (And this is a smallish fandom; feel free to self-promote!) Tell your friends! I'll try to keep this updated as long as there's interest.

Doctor Who fans! Have you been hearing about the Big Finish full-cast audio dramas? Have you wanted to give them a shot? Well, today's the day for it! It's Big Finish day! The first fifty audios are on sale for £5 each, which amounts to about $10 including shipping for Americans, or $5 for a download. These are spectacularly high quality audios featuring the Fifth through Eighth Doctors and I love them like pie. [livejournal.com profile] calapine has an excellent recommendation post here that might help you get started. I hope this prompts more people to check out the audios - they're absolutely fantastic.

And one for folks in all fandoms: remember that Awesome Ladies Commentfic fest? Did you realize there's also a full-length fic fest associated with it? The deadline to sign up has been extended to the 9th, and you have until the 27th to produce a minimum of 1000 words about the female character(s) of your choice. Awesome!

And a DS9 fic rec: Misremembering the Alamo by [livejournal.com profile] loneraven (PG, gen), which was written for the [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest and is a fantastic exploration of Ezri's character. Go read!

What else has been going on, fandom-wise? Rec me fics! Rec me fandoms! Rec me fests! Rec me... other things beginning with the letter 'f'!
eponymous_rose: (Default)
I just keep reccing [livejournal.com profile] alibi_factory!

Here shall John always stumble; there shall Jane's heart always break - spoilers through "Vincent and the Doctor". It's absolutely fantastic. Do check it out!
eponymous_rose: (DW | TARDIS)
I promise, I meant to post these recs before the reveal, but I slept in. ;) I still haven't looked at whodunit just yet, except for the fic I received because hey, curiosity burning!

First off, though, here's the reveal: I wrote Circular Time (the Mirror, Mirror Remix), which is All About Susan and was Far Too Much Fun To Write. It stands on its own, but I really, really recommend that you go forth and read the original, which is [livejournal.com profile] aceofannwn's excellent Circular Time. And now that the reveal's done, I can also say a huge thank you to [livejournal.com profile] tigerkat24 for the beta! ♥

And I'm going to repeat the earlier rec I made, because said fic is Just That Good: [livejournal.com profile] meddow wrote me Bright Star (Faith in Physics Remix). If you didn't listen earlier, listen now: go read! :D

Now for some recs in various fandoms:

Doctor Who
The Bees, The Bees (The Five Times Donna Met the Doctor Without Realising It Remix)
The Brigadier's Weddings (The "Third Time Luckiest' Remix)
A Child's Illustrated Treasury of Regeneration Trauma (The Doctor Who Discovers Edition)
Dimensions in Space (The Perfect Fit Remix)
Sugar, Sugar (You Can Have My Private Number Remix)
This is Tomorrow (the getaway driver remix)
You Will Be Me (The When I'm Gone Ontological Tautology Remaster)

River Lays an Egg (Upside Down Remix)

Stargate Atlantis
Flipside (The Red Sox Remix)

Stargate SG-1
Best-Laid Plans
Fair Play

Star Trek XI
There is Joy in Repetition (But Sometimes You Have to Break Routine Extended Remix)

The West Wing
The Truth About Her Life (Flickering Firebrand Remix)
Backstory, or how Danny Concannon Covered 5 Stories that Never Happened (the Behind the Scenes Remix)

And there you have it! Now I get to go see who wrote what and generally squee and such. :D
eponymous_rose: (DW | Sarah | SJ)
Remix/Redux 2010 (that wacky multifandom fic exchange where people write someone else's fic from a different direction) is up and running! Plenty of fics in plenty of fandoms - I'm looking forward to compiling a rec post shortly.

But my first rec's a piece of cake - my remixer made me Bright Star (Faith in Physics Remix), which is a spectacular look at Bright Star from Sarah Jane's POV, and the remix puts such a fantastic new spin on it. Go read!

And, yes, this means there's a fic of mine floating around in the archive, too (third year doing Remix/Redux, hurrah!). If you guess which one I wrote before the reveal, I will... um. Write you a drabble?
eponymous_rose: (DW | TARDIS | Old School Funky Planet)
I assume everyone's stumbled across this at some point today? Map of the TARDIS. Go look.
