A Very Special Friday Five (TM)
Aug. 23rd, 2007 05:13 pmOkay, so I wasn't gonna do it this week, but then I saw this post at
doctorwho, which led over to this post. So a Doctor Who Friday Five it is! :D
1. Friday fill-in: Doctor Who is _________
Fantastic! :D Also: silly, awesome, incomprehensible, profound, unpredictable, ridiculous, hilarious, weird, clever, and, of course, indescribable.
2. Who's your favourite Doctor and why?
Well, I could just go with my favourite (Ninth - Christopher Eccleston, of course!). But that feels sort of mean, since they're really all just so freaking awesome. So, in my typical style, I'm gonna go waay overboard and go on a bit about each Doctor.
First Doctor: William Hartnell - I know so very, very little about him. My plan, once I'm through with the BFAs, is to start on the TV show from season one (including all those recons). I should at the very least watch "An Unearthly Child", it being the first serial and all. Y'know, pronto. Ooh, I have the Target novelisation! Must... read...
Second Doctor: Patrick Troughton - I've only seen a couple of his serials, but found them pretty dang enjoyable. Panicky Doctor! And Jamie! And kilt! How can you possibly go wrong? (Again, I'm gonna need to start watching these RIGHT AWAY. Get caught up, me!)
Third Doctor: Jon Pertwee - I think he could easily become one of my favourite Doctors, if I could only get around to watching any of his episodes. This is a bit embarrassing. *hangs head in shame* My terribly n00bish fanliness comes to the fore. Again.
Fourth Doctor: Tom Baker - Ooh! Finally, a Doctor whose serials I've seen in their entirety (including the Shada recon, after a little YouTube magic!). I'm a big fan of Baker's - particularly the earlier stuff (and not just because of my Harry!crush, dangit!). He's absolutely nuts, doesn't much care who knows it, and does the whole if-you-don't-carry-a-gun-they-probably-won't-shoot-you thing quite well! And - "have I the right?" Awesome. I did find the later episodes a bit different - still good, but definitely different. This was partly because I didn't warm to Romana's second regeneration for some time - don't ask me why! Of course, if I were to watch 'em again, I'm sure I'd have a bit of a different view...
Fifth Doctor: Peter Davison - Saw the first few of his serials before getting hooked on the Eighth Doctor BFAs and leaving off for a bit. I really wouldn't mind watching more, though. He's just so... nice! And celery! And cricket! And pretty! Mind you, now I've started listening to the Fifth Doctor BFAs and am enjoying the heck out of them. Turlough!
Sixth Doctor: Colin Baker - Haven't seen any of the serials (bad me, I know), but I love the audios! It's nice to see a more impatient/shouty Doctor who nonetheless keeps the same Doctorly qualities of the earlier incarnations. :D I get the feeling I might be a bit put off by the outfit. At first, at least. I'd give 'im a chance! *starts making banners and buttons to begin crusade for the advancement of Six*
Seventh Doctor: Sylvester McCoy - He has really, really started growing on me. I'm reading a few of the New Adventures right now, and I'm also quite a big fan of his audios (shocker, that, especially considering that I seem to love all audios ever). There's something very, very dark and scary and menacing about him, and also something terribly sad. He's alien in a really creepy way - he orchestrates things, plays elaborate games, is complicated and almost totally inaccessible. Which was the audio where Ace and Hex were trying to get him to just tell them what's going on? He can't do it. Way too secretive. Which is, of course, really, really fun. I need to read/listen to "Model Train Set", because I love the idea of comparing his defining traits with the diametrically opposed ones of the Eighth Doctor!
Eighth Doctor: Paul McGann - I think I've already got banners and buttons for the crusade for the advancement of Eight! Really, don't let the TVM (or the horrible timeliney mess) put you off - I maintain that nobody can keep a negative attitude towards the Eighth Doctor after listening to "Storm Warning" or reading "Vampire Science" (I don't really count "The Eight Doctors" as the first of his novels - it has such a... uh... different feel to the rest of 'em). Moments of real, spooky darkness alternate with such amazing optimism. An amalgam of all my favourite Doctorly attributes. I've already gone into my reasons for Eight!fangirling with
mad_march_hare on AIM, and this journal is full of random Eight-related observations that probably sum things up nicely, so I'll keep myself from repeating things. Poor amnesiac Doctor. Doesn't get enough love! *waves flag*
Ninth Doctor: Christopher Eccleston - And how do I count the ways? He plays the character with a sort of brilliant gut-feeling - and I really think of Nine as in the midst of change (he and Eight are the two sides of the Time War, and the transition extends across both of their timelines). He's positively manic, terrifyingly vulnerable, extremely good-humoured, but not willing to take crap. Really not willing to take it. He's a very dark and obviously lonely character - everything about his look is just so sparse and restrained compared to, say, Colin Baker. Or, y'know, any of the others. This is the point where the Doctor stopped being about what's he's capable of - what he could do - and really started being about what he did do. Really - the Doctor stops living in the future and briefly takes on the very human "failing" of living in the past. Of course, he's not all gloom-and-doom - there's this glee that extends unexpectedly beyond the superficial. The neat thing about him is that he's not really all that much of a hero in and of himself - but he inspires heroism in others. Fun!
Tenth Doctor: David Tennant - Definitely a fan. He's absolutely crazy, and just a great big ball of timey-wimey energy. Of course, this can get overwhelming some of the time, but I'm willing to make concessions. Very, very nerdy and geeky, which is always a good thing in my books! :D I'm fairly sure his psychological issues could fill something very big, and he's got a lot of Seven's detachment and darkness without the scheming. He alternates nuttily between being extremely, painfully human and very distinctly alien. He's also extremely fun to write.
3. Who's your favourite companion/assistant and why?
Obviously, I'm not gonna do the same thing here, if only for the sake of my keyboard. Heehee.
I have a lot of favourite companions, though - but my favourite is probably Fitz. Because, yes. He's Fitz!
Hey, that was quick!
4. Who's the best villain and why?
Hm. I like Simm!Master well enough, but I've always had a bit of a thing about the whole Big Bad idea (anyone who's read my Moriarty-related rants on HN knows this!). I tend to like the MOTW-type baddies. Sebastian Grayle from "Seasons of Fear" was a heckuva lot of fun. And in terms of design, I adore the Weeping Angels from "Blink". Ooh, and Faction Paradox, from the EDAs! I need to listen to the Faction Paradox spinoff sometime... Generally, though, my favourite villians aren't really villains at all and more just sort of... morally ambiguous. Whee!
5. If you could script an episode what would happen?
That's a Very Good Question. Probably stuff on another world, with time-travel. I'd want to see if I could convey the same sense of immediate danger you get in a time-travel story set on Earth. For the rest, I'll just point to my fanfic, completed and otherwise. :D
Ooh, that was fun.
...oh. I just realized it's Thursday. Well, bright and early, then! *waves hands*
