Am I a sucker for a mystery or am I a sucker for a mystery? I'm loving this series of Who so very much.

Was going to post at length about topics such as my bizarre and exciting job, pretty-boy spies, time-travelling aliens, and fanfiction and such, but it is nearly 3 AM, so that's probably not such a great idea at this point. Shortly, then!

In the meantime, have a meme! I stole it from [livejournal.com profile] wiccagirl24.

Ask me my opinion of any fannish topic. Show, character, storyline, meta issues, kerfuffle, you name it, I shall opine about it.

I would dearly like to opine about kerfuffle, just to say I did.

Because I feel lonely in my fangirlification, I'd like to know your opinion on C'rizz. Everybody seems to not-like him. (I don't mean that everybody hates him, like Adric, for example. It's more of a vague hostility because they liked it better when it was just Eight 'n' Charley team Tardis. And it makes me sad.)

Yeah. So did I. This audio is... agh. I mean, the plot looked a bit like "Doctor Who meets BtVS" (although it wasn't nearly as bad as Minuet in Hell, and there were some really great characters), but the ending! And Charley's reaction! And... Ah, I loved it.

Anyway, it's really nice to see fellow C'rizz fans. There are so few of them! Including you and I, there are 7 members on [livejournal.com profile] eutermesan_love. Now *that* is depressing. (If I can, I'll write some C'rizz fic for [livejournal.com profile] toobroadtoodeep)

Ah, well now I feel like I've built it up a bit. I honestly have very little opinion on nearly every DW kerfuffle, if only because I have a tendency to enjoy nearly every pairing/character (and those I don't enjoy, I keep well enough to myself that I assume most people don't even know about it), and (in my experience, at least) shipwars tend to make both sides look equally bad/victimised. I honestly will ship anyone, and I summarily reject the idea of OTPs of any kind. That doesn't mean I summarily reject people who have OTPs! Hee, my flist would be awfully tiny if I did. I just think that, regardless of what we see on the screen, fandom is a niche for new and exciting interpretations of canon. Arguments as to whether something was or was not intended by the writers seem a bit counterproductive to me, because I really don't think one person's pairing is inherently "better" than anyone else's, regardless of canon support.

(But then, I justify over-analysing literature of all kinds by freely admitting to bulldozing over the author's intention. Half the fun of writing something is the unintentional layering that everyone interprets a wee bit differently. Fandom is all about the differences.)

Anyway. That's me, ever the peacemaker. Or, uh, ever with my head in the sand. ;)

Fair enough...

Changing the subject completely - you probably haven't had a chance to catch my reviews of the Four&Sarah books I recently read, in which I mentioned that the only good thing I could say about "Evolution" was that it finally prompted me to start reading Holmes !

Goodness, this is CONTROVERSY TIME. Loomy looms!

(I don't suppose I can get away with saying that the word "loom", particularly with added 'o's, makes me giggle? No?)

My personal canon can do backbends that enable me to accept or reject looms based entirely on which way's most convenient at the time, mostly because [livejournal.com profile] violetisblue's Threads has sold me on the fact that they can be used, and used well. If that means I could get in bed with the asexualists (wait, poor choice of metaphor), then yeah. Doesn't bother me one way or t'other.

Hey, I make a living out of being objective. Opinions? What are these things of which you speak? ;)

I do have a wee bit of a bias towards mindlessly accepting book canon, out of some defensiveness or other, so that probably factors in. Wouldn't touch the debate with a ten-foot pole, though!

(Also, psst - am I completely insane, or did you write my [livejournal.com profile] remixredux08 remix? Because it was all kinds of awesome, and this is my Grand Theory. Ignore me if such is not the case, because I tend not to do well at guessing games!)

Eh, RTD? Ignoring personal issues I may have with the guy (which I do, because actually thinking about most of the people behind Who tends to leave me with a bit of a bad feeling in my mouth), I think he's done some good stuff. I enjoyed The Christmas Invasion quite a lot, and I think that his first-series episodes in particular were very nice (after all, they got me hooked!). Much as I enjoyed "Partners in Crime", though, I think it was one of the weaker episodes of the series thus far. But, you know, good series! So kudos, generally.

But, yeah. Good luck getting me to form a coherent opinion about any of the actors/writers/directors personally, because I tend to avoid following that sort of thing. 'Scuse me while I keep my head in the sand for a while. ;)

I really do love that he's such a totally alien companion (something that works better with the audio medium, I assume). And while his, uh, last appearance (attempting not to spoil) did rub me a bit the wrong way, I found his character pretty interesting on the whole. Jack/K9 is srs bsns, my friend. No silliness here! Never silliness. Nope.

Quite apart from the confusing mechanics that might put a damper on the mood, Jack would hit it. I mean, not so much with the flesh and blood, but acerbic wit and dry humour! It could happen.

Hee, yes! I was a bit less than enthused myself, overall, until I blindly followed [livejournal.com profile] prof_pangaea's squee to the Bert Coules series of audios (the complete canon with the same two actors, for the first time ever), which flesh out even the short stories into a full 45 minutes. Very, very awesome.

The fandom's a bit terrifying, understandably. (One day I will get into a fandom that doesn't stretch back to long before I was born!)

*jumping inelegently onto subject*

by the way, i dropped off the face of the planet for a while after i heard that mr. coules was in the process of writing a third further adventures series (this was a couple years ago i think!). did it air and all that, do you know? i checked his website, but it is not a very good one, and doesn't look like it's been updated for... a long time.

Ah, Caerdroia ♥ It's one of my favourite audios, yeah. I don't really like the whole Divergent arc (although Natural History of Fear is quite wonderful in its creepiness, and Faith Stealer has some great crack), but Caerdroia is THE AWESOME.

Might I ask what you didn't like in Absolution? (I mean, if it's not to spoilery or anything) I didn't really *like* it all that much, but, well, I'm curious like that.

Oh, yes, please do! Wacky adventure!fic is my very favourite kind of Eight!fic ♥ (For my part, I'm probably going to write something with them more of the "temporal angst" kind. Something to do with Gallifrey 1.4, which you must listen to, for it is made of awesome.)

Lucie isn't loved like she should be. Part of the problem is that her stories aren't all that good. There are some really wonderful moments in them, but I think the script editor could have been a bit more demanding. At least for the first season, the new season is very good.

It's the unpopular characters that need the most love.

I'm gonna take the coward's way out and only comment on whether or not I like their writing - I think it's pretty much a given that Steven Moffat makes my blood boil with his brainless commentary, etc.

I really do have a tendency to enjoy Steven Moffat's episodes, because yay creepiness, and also hooray for strange situations in general (horse on a spaceship, barrage balloons - I like WTF moments in my sci-fi, I do). Also, he's the only writer who's managed to make me at all interested in Jack Harkness, so, uh.

Helen Raynor's two-parter in S3 is pretty much the only thing I haven't rewatched - it's just not all that good. I didn't mind her wacky Sontaran-flavoured adventures this time around, though, mostly because I am easy when it comes to potato-shaped aliens.

Gareth Roberts wrote "Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?", which means that I am constantly on the verge of embarrassing myself with fannish glee. I also enjoyed "The Unicorn and the Wasp", and "The Shakespeare Code", so yes. Gold star.

Re: Cornell - I enjoyed the "Human Nature"/"Family of Blood" two-parter, mostly because yay, historical, and good characterization for Martha (minus that one pining-over-the-Doctor line that I refuse to believe actually happened). "Father's Day" I was more up in the air about, but I do seem to enjoy it more each time I watch it. I read "Human Nature" a while back and was somewhat less enthused than most people seemed to be, but that may be because I was on a road trip and skimming for the most part, and also unfamiliar at that point with the wonder that is Benny.

So, uh. Yes.

I will do the little SPOILERS thing so that I can talk about it with impunity.

I haven't listened to Absolution more than the one time, and there was quite a gap between that and the other Eight audios, so that could've been a factor. It just seemed a bit wonky with Eight's characterisation - I could see it if they'd dropped more hints early on that he just wanted it to be him and Charley, but as it is, his C'rizz h8 comes out of the blue. I know it's also probably supposed to be a very meta reflection on the fans or something, but, hrm. Bit of an odd ending, all told. (I adored The Girl Who Never Was, though.)

I mean, even considering that, yeah, the Doctor liked C'rizz less than he liked Charley (this coming from the fact that he loves Charley so much [that's me being on the brink of shippiness, ack, help]), he's so very good at feeling guilty about people dying around him and stuff.
