Music Meme of Powah!
May. 28th, 2007 05:40 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Well, because I spend about 90% of my working waking hours hooked up to my lil' iPod, I figured it was about time for me to do this particular infamous meme.
The rules? Randomize whatever music-type device you've got handy and explain what the first twenty songs mean to you. Post lyrics if you like. No cheating, mind. We all want to know exactly why you've got the Barney theme on there. It makes for a good meme.
This particular iPod has been my pet for the last three-ish years, and contains the sum of the random MP3 CDs I had kicking around at the time (including some that belonged to my brother). This is a weird, weird mix.
1. Sand in my Shoes - Dido
"I've still got sand in my shoes
And I can't somethingsomethingsomething"
Wow. Um. I'd forgotten that was on here. The thing that springs immediately to mind is, for some reason, doing the ol' physiotherapy limp on the treadmill in my parents' basement. Because, I guess, if I had sand in my shoes it would be really annoying. What with the walking and all.
It also sort of reminds me of that first-season Spooks/MI-5 episode where the girl (Um. You know, whatshername. It's been a few years, obviously.) is undercover as a schoolteacher and edumacates the kids using lyrics from a Dido song. Heehee.
Next question!
2. Eclipse - Pink Floyd
"All that you something!
And all that you something!
All that you something!
...something else!"
For some reason, this puts me in a minivan.
Dad would drive my brother and me to school in our little purple minivan (they told us it was cranberry! Cranberry!) and we'd listen to the newfangled classic rock station. They always played Pink Floyd.
It also reminds me of gas leaks (our school's equivalent of snow days, alas), because then we'd get a ride home in the classic!rock minivan as well. Good times.
3. Have You Got It In You? - Imogen Heap
This is an entirely new song that I just pulled off my brother's iPod this weekend. I'll listen to it now, come back to it later, and see what it reminds me of.
Ooh, experiment!
4. Variation 5 - Jacques Loussier Trio
"Dooodooodoodoodoodoodooodooo"
Heehee. Variation 5 of Bach's Goldberg Variations, that is. A la jazz.
I have mad love for this whole album, and even though this particular variation is crazy short and is basically just a sped-up/stylized virtuoso piano performance with the odd bass fugue and cymbal shimmer, it's extremely effective and I love it.
Reminds me of betaing a certain awesome Doctor Who story while at work. *wink*
5. White Ash - The Pillows
"WHITE ASH! I'M THE WHITE ASH!
SOMETHING!
WHITE ASH!
NOWNOWNOW!"
Woah! Random Japanese sixties-esque rock group! These guys are awesome (my first exposure to them was the eponymous "We Have Theme Song").
Hm. This one reminds me of... trying to cram as many people as possible into a phone booth on a very brief class trip detour through London.
Again, don't ask me why. It seems about right, though.
6. O Canada - Jazz Choir
"Ton histoire est une epopee
Des plus brilliants exploits"
This one reminds me of a (somewhat unrelated) concert of my little brother's. He had his first-ever solo performance (not in this song, alas) in front of an audience of three thousand. Lights go down, spotlight comes up, he takes centre stage and I burst into tears. *wince* Luckily, he aced the song and it was a silly sentimental thing so I wasn't the only one. Whew.
A capella O Canada sung by a small group has always reminded me of standing in a WWII graveyard in France and hearing a few classmates start to sing spontaneously by the gravestones. Oh man, did I ever cry.
Um. On a happier note:
3. Have You Got It In You - Imogen Heap (again)
"Something spiffy and techno"
Now that I've listened to it, I know precisely what it reminds me of!
Writing this meme! Huzzah!
Oh, wait. That's just lame.
Um. I like the song. It reminds me of bus rides. Okay. Moving on...
7. Why Do You Love Me - Garbage
"Why do you love me?
Why do you love me?
Why do you love me?
It's driving me crazy!"
Yay! I love Garbage because they basically imitate a different style with every new CD and nobody really seems to notice. This one's from their latest CD (well, it was their latest CD a few years ago. Dunno what's happening now.), all shouty and repetitive. And awesome.
This one reminds me of sitting in the living room of my condo and playing random songs from my iPod for my new roommates. Two years ago, that was. Wow!
8. U2 - Pride
"In the name of love"
Every single U2 song in the history of ever reminds me of the long, long bus ride to meet up with my Mom in BC right after my Grandad died.
On the plus side, that was a real sort of coming-together time for my family. And that was the first time I saw any real vulnerability in my Mom, and that's when we started becoming friends for real. That's the sort of thing that has to happen when you're thirteen.
9. Steam - Peter Gabriel
"You know your stripper from your paint
You know your sinner from your saint
Whenever heaven's doors are shut
You kick them open but
I know you."
Woot! I remember my Dad bringing home a DVD of absolutely insane Peter Gabriel music videos. Every single one of his songs that remotely resembles anything from this period makes me think of the weird claymation-esque animations. And the pizza I had while we watched it. Yum.
Dang. This has awesome lyrics.
10. Kertosakeen nainen - Rajaton
"Stuff in finnish!"
Yes, I have Finnish a capella on my iPod. Why do you ask?
Also, I know I'm missing an accent there, but I closed my eyes and suffered through "epopee" above, so this stays the way it is. Nyeh.
All Rajaton music reminds me of playing Mario Kart: Double Dash with my brother. Occasionally Mario Party. Something weird and Gamecubey, anyway. We'd get tired of the crack!music and so hook up his iPod and play our own.
11. Lithium - Nirvana
"I'm so happy
'Cause today I found my friends
They're in my head"
This is a really messed-up association, but it reminds me of going out to visit my Gran. We take her out to lunch once a week (it's a routine, which is always a good thing for progressive non-Alzheimer's dementia) and my brother and I subject Mom and Dad to our latest musical picks for the half-hour drive. So, this particular song reminds me of chicken fingers and chocolate milk. I have some crossed wires, somewhere.
12. Hide And Seek - Imogen Heap
"Where are we?
What the hell is going on?
The dust has only just begun to fall,
Crop circles in the carpet."
This song gives me chills every time I hear it, which probably means that there's some powerful subconscious association going on. I dunno. The only time I've heard it recently has been at one of the Mario!gaming nights and once on the way home from the grocery store with my Dad. It's something about the electronic blur. Not quite human, but very, very nice.
13. The Kids Are All Right - The Who
"Sometimes
I feel I gotta get away
Bells chime
I know I gotta get away."
This is my Dad's self-appointed theme song. Not entirely sure why, but it's fun.
Reminds me very, very strongly of the two-hour car ride I spent with my Dad on my way to get my wisdom teeth/ouchy jaw surgery done. We listened to weird covers of all sorts of music, and it was generally a good time.
14. Surfacing - David Usher
"And high above me I can feel the world
But I don't need it
I don't need it
I don't need it
I just need you."
Wow, this is an old one. It puts me in mind of daydreaming on a crowded bus somewhere in Germany. Oh, wait! I remember why!
I was listening to it on the bus when we pulled up at a freakin' top secret air base. They gave us all special security clearance and we watched a military jet take off.
It was a real WTF moment, and therefore quite memorable.
(I still wonder sometimes whether one of my high school teachers had super-secret military connections...)
15. Libera Me - Sherlock Holmes Soundtrack
"Something Latin and haunting"
Ooh, this is a gorgeous song. It reminds me, of course, of the Jeremy Brett version of "The Priory School" with all the creepiness and awesomeness and whatnot.
On a more random note, it puts me in the library at lunch, munching away on one of my famous leftover salads (in which I cram everything remaining in the fridge into a tupperware container and garnish it with spinach) while trying to puzzle out my latest Mechanics assignment.
Holy cow. I'm done Mechanics!
(I keep dancing around and shouting "No more Calculus-based Physics courses!" but I'm just in denial over "Atmospheric Fluid Dynamics" next year. And whatnot.)
16. Experimental Film - They Might Be Giants
"I already know the ending
It's the part that makes your face implode.
I don't know what makes your face implode,
But that's the way the movie ends."
Heeheehee. I love this song. Of course, I associate it with Homestar Runner. Good times all around.
(I also associate it with a dinosaur museum.)
17. Poster of a Girl - Metric
"Feel like just a baby
Portrait of a lady
Poster of a girl"
*shrugs* I know lots and lots of people who absolutely hate Metric (when they came to town, the lead singer had a lovely little freak-out at the audience), but I like 'em. This particular song reminds me of walking down the street and basically getting myself lost downtown for the heck of it. Huzzah!
18. House of the Rising Sun - The Animals
"There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun "
I really love this song.
Um. Associations? Alas, it all comes back to American Idol. *hangs head in shame*
Oh, and yet another long car ride with my Dad. Seem to have quite a lot of those.
19. The Doctor's Theme - Murray Gold
"Oooooohoooohoooohoooh"
*cough* Well, you know how it goes.
I like this one a lot.
Reminds me of Nine more than Ten, but I've got little associations with each: I'm pretty sure it plays when Rose first steps into the TARDIS, all WTF. Awesome.
But - new association! In the latest episode (ooh, SPOILER), with John Smith and all that. There's this little moment where you think he's going to remember something (can't quite recall where it came in), and there's just this little snippet of the theme that returns. It cuts off almost immediately, and the whole thing is about three hundred different kinds of awesome.
*re-reads* Oh. I guess that wasn't really much of a spoiler, anyway. I'm too vague. *hangs head*
20. Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major - Yo Yo Ma
"Brum brum brubrubrubrubrubru"
(What? What? It's all sirens, anyway.)
Oh, jeez. What a way to finish.
Yeah - another TV association, with "The West Wing" this time and Josh's messed-up Post-Traumatic Christmas Disorder.
Reminds me of guys stuck in holes and creepy carolers and "Yo Yo Ma Rules!" and way too much awesome.
Woohoo! We all made it through that! This was a fun meme. I like this one.
In fact, I might attempt it again sometime. I loves my music.

Date: 2007-05-29 04:09 pm (UTC)When I was little (say, four or five), I wanted nothing more than to be a clown when I grew up. (Police officer was the dream the year before, and astronaut the year after.) Of course, I was (and still am) utterly terrified of large groups of people. And, er, small ones, for that matter.
All the same, my day wasn't complete until I'd made a friend laugh! :D
