Q & A
My favorite story this year (of my own):
I have a soft spot for "Five Places the Doctor Never Took Liz Shaw", because it just sort of came up out of nowhere and cheerfully ate my brains. It was written in one sitting, in an hour, without much thought or planning beyond the general structure. It was also way more popular than I expected - 11 reviews, I think? Definitely my most popular one-shot of the year. But it feels right, despite the fact that I have no recollection of having written it. I love the concept and the structure, and there's a surprising amount of feeling in there, too.
My best story this year:
That untitled-and-unposted Inferno-verse fic. It's fairly poetic, and I always wind up having to google phrases to make sure I really am making them up. And, like a good canon-based fic should do, it puts a bit of a spin on each character that hopefully hasn't been done to death - and it does a lot of wild spinning from darkfic to humour. In terms of actual posted (and completed!) fic, I think "Things Best Left Unseen" is the most tightly-written. The first three parts of "A Wilderness of Mirrors" are nicely done, but I rushed the ending.
Story most tragically underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Hee! I can just complain here, can't I? Actually, I've been overwhelmed by the positive reaction to all my fic. More reviews are always lovely, though!
Most overrated story, in my opinion:
There were a few drabbles here and there that I really didn't much like - so, yes. Probably those.
Most fun story:
"Things Best Left Unseen"! Despite some dark bits, it's mostly a lot of silliness. Great fun! :D
Most sexy story:
Well, depending on your tastes, probably the untitled Inferno-verse fic. I don't do a lot of what could be construed as sexy, though!
Story with the single sexiest moment:
Again, the Inferno-verse fic has a couple. Maybe I'm just using that as a smokescreen. :D
Most unintentionally telling story:
"Five Places the Doctor Never Took Liz Shaw" contains an historical error, revealing that I do most of my research on Wikipedia. :D
"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for me" story:
I tend to tiptoe outside my comfort zone more than anything else. Even the fic born of crack ("Wilderness of Mirrors") wound up being pretty tame.
Story that shifted my own perception of the characters:
Lots of the early drabbles did that - "Evolution", "Beauty is Truth", "Lost at Sea". But then, I only consider a fic to be a success if I come away from it feeling like I changed my perception of the characters in one way or another. This Inferno-verse fic is taking a bit of a disturbing look at some of my favourite characters, which is actually kind of a neat experience.
Hardest story to write:
You mean apart from the Big Bang fic that I've barely started? *grins* "A Wilderness of Mirrors", because I had it started and couldn't quite figure out how to finish it. (A rarity - usually I have the ending planned if nothing else.) And - yeah, I'm mentioning this one a lot - the Inferno-verse fic, because it's so wildly out of my comfort zone that I keep backtracking. (Also, I've developed this habit of just throwing randomly humorous bits in at the end of each writing session - outtakes!)
Worst story:
Eh, a couple of the drabbles are pretty weak, but that's what they are! Strangely enough, the drabbles I wrote at work are my favourites. ;)
Easiest story to write:
As mentioned before, "Five Places the Doctor Never Took Liz Shaw". A couple of the "Wanderer Fantasy" chapters just appeared fully formed, too.
Story I'd like to revise (but probably won't):
I'd like to go back and fix up the last two parts of "A Wilderness of Mirrors", but, yeah. Probably won't happen.
Story I wish I'd finished:
The Wanderer Fantasy! Here's hoping I'll get it done in 2008. *winks* Also, it would've been nice to have finished "Such Spirit Through the Year" a bit earlier so that I could actually get a beta for it before New Year's Day. And the Big Bang fic. That'd be nice to have done!
Story I didn't write but swear I will, someday:
Well, the Big Bang fic! I certainly hope I'll have it ready by the deadline. After all, it combines my two favourite fandoms - Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who. Fun times ahead! And I'd really like to write a Martha!fic. And a multichaptered wacky adventure fic with Three and Jo! And an Avengers-fic!
Extra Questions
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Hee! Before this, I hadn't written any (significant) fic since April 2006! So, uh, yes. Moar fic than predicted. Mostly due to the awesome that is you guys!
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2007?
Well, Doctor Who. I was always sort of scribbling away at Sherlock Holmes stories. And the lack of any real pairing-type-fics wasn't really unexpected at all.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Some of my first forays into new parts of the Doctor Who fandom were pretty ambitious. "Five Places the Doctor Never Took Liz Shaw" was my first full-length Classic Who fic, and the 10,000-word "Things Best Left Unseen" was my first attempt at writing Five, Peri, or Erimem. And - oh, yes - "The Wanderer Fantasy" was my first full-length Doctor Who fic, period. I've learned that, as long as you put careful attention into your fic, doing something a little different can pay huge dividends. The aforementioned fics have all been surprisingly popular, and very rewarding to write. :D
The most writerly-type risk is the nonlinear and very dark Inferno-verse fic. It's structured, but it's a strange sort of structure that messes with my brain. And it deals with extremely serious issues that I don't think I've ever tried writing about before. An experiment!
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
Oh, heck. I'll just come out with it, then - I'm gonna try to write (and post) something every day, whether it be a snippet of an upcoming fic, a drabble, or a full-length fic. Last time I tried something like this, it lasted one day. Time to break that record! *strikes a pose*
I also want to finish the 5 fics I've nearly completed sometime in January, before school (and research) really picks up again.
