Let's see.  I've had a Blogger account for the last... five years or so.  I rarely use it anymore - and I spend at least an hour per day on Livejournal, wandering about and generally making a nuisance of myself in my stalkerish "Anonymouse" guise.

So here I am!

I hope to be posting random updates and memes and such, since we all know how exciting the life of a university student is.  Right?  Right?

I'll also (more importantly) be posting fanfiction (because omgyaysummer starts in under two weeks!).  Currently have two projects underway for Holmes!fic: the Great Mrs. Hudson Crack!Fic of Unavoidable Procrastination, and the More Serious Lestrade!Fic of Epic Proportions.  Look for those in the next few weeks.  Hopefully.

I might post fanfic in other fandoms, depending on what I become randomly obsessed with over the summer.  :D

And, of course, I'll finally get a good leg up on my novel in progress and post a few snippets from time to time.  Because with quasi-supernatural-mystery-thrillers, it's generally a good idea to give people a chance to wonder what you were on when you created this character or where the heck this plot disappeared to.

Or why the heck you're writing it in the first place.

Okay: update time.  I'm just (as in, just) finishing off my second year of an honours bachelor degree in Atmospheric Science.  My first exam is for my hellish mechanics class (this professor's last final had a spectacular class average of 19% - and this is with a course mostly composed of engineers and Physics majors!).  I'm going in with a B/B+, and I'm hoping to, y'know, not crash and burn miserably.  I'm basically counting on an A- at the very least in my other four courses (they're comparatively easy, thank goodness: Calculus IV, GIS, Environmental Instrumentation, and Chemistry I), so I think all will be well.  Whatever the case, I'm relaxed and playing a lot of piano.  So yay!

Yes, piano: finally picked up the Goldberg Variations and have been toodling away at them (NB: I loff Bach to death, but my electric piano clicks like mad unless I lean on the sustain pedal, and that makes the nice Baroque sound go kerplooie).  To boost my ego, I've been interspersing the *wince*CLICK*wince*CLICK baroque stuff with some fluffy Chopin waltzes.  And Rachmaninoff, who is generally anything but fluffy.

Speaking of Russian kicks (segue much?), I'm really, really wanting to get the Russian SH series.  Am trying to toss the odd bill into my Xmas-tree-light-box-of-hidden-changeness, but I keep craving delicious restaurant-style food and wind up slipping out more than I toss in.

Also, am on approximately the 17th day of my sugar-fast.  Around finals/midterms, I just stop eating anything and everything with sugar (I have been known to consume terrifying amounts of candy prior to exams and cleverly smile at the wall in lieu of scribbling down any answers) - this includes such delicacies as that terrible fluorescent green fruit-like beverage my roommates and I are hooked on, the 1-kg bag of toffee and fruit drops in my drawer, and even the vast majority of granola bars out there.  As a result, I eat chips and mini pizzas.  Crap.  There's a flaw there...

This summer, I'll be taking on a position as research assistant with one of the world's leading experts on hail and tornadoes.  :D Considering the fact that my last job was as a line cook in a busy kitchen with no AC (45 degrees C?  Why not!) and a rather fuzzy view of labour laws (Fifteen hour shift sans break?  Certainly!), anything will be a welcome change.  The fact that I'm getting paid to continue my edumacation over the summer is pretty sweet, if you ask me.

And, finally, I'll be studying up for my seventh (and final) music theory exam - History IV.  After this one (if I pass it, of course), I get my nice and shiny Grade 10 RCM certificate in the mail (I expect that our postman will ignore the label and fold it in half again).  And then I can frame it and marvel at the fact that, while it took me only nine years to finish the practical part, the theory requirements (actually, just the history requirements) stretched it out to twelve. :o

I love music history, I really do.  I'm just a little slow getting started, that's all.

Oh, and fencing.  There's always fencing.

In conclusion: I'm generally a cheerful person.  When I post on a blog, it's typically to sporfle over something amusing, in the hopes of having someone sporfle along with me.  Because this world could use more sporfling.  (Sporflage?  Sporflogistics?)

I'm a fairly political person, but I typically keep it to myself.  I've also long since recognized my absolute ignorance in all things religious and generally refrain from commenting to avoid looking like an idiot/asshat.

I don't swear a hell of a lot (hee), so this journal is generally rated PG for the occasional bout of potty-mouthedness and some adult themes.  *waggles eyebrows*

In terms of fandom: I adore all pairings, so long as they're written well (well, bad!fic's fun too).  I'm terrible at writing romance of any sort, so I typically write gen-type stuff.  My writing is primarily plot-based and epic, which makes my dang character studies so hard to do.  So, yes, I'm practicing.

I'm a terrible weather nerd with a camera and a fairly good view of the sky.  You've been warned.

Also, I'm a little rambly and disorganized this late at night.  See my optimistic statement of 'conclusion' five paragraphs up for proof.

And I'm done.  Yes.

-U.G. (I also have a habit of signing my HN name everywhere I go.  I don't know what that's all about.)

*applauds*

A most worthy introduction, m'dear! Brava!

I'm so tickled that my Hudson!crack fic is nearly here. Almost all of the fanfiction that I have so adored reading has been hideously abandoned by their authors. It makes me sad. SO! I'm anxiously looking forward to your exquisite brand of unromantic deliciousness. Weehoo!

And good on you for pursuing so many worthy educational endeavors as well! I sekritly wish I could play the piano, I really do. Particularly since it appears as though I have the hands for it. *waggles monkey fingers* But alas... all I can do is lust after those who can tickle the works of Rachmaninov with graceful beauty. Sigh. Lucky for you, if a tornado suddenly dropped down on a piano recital, you would be SET. *thumbs up*

Hooray for camera nerds!

The Hudson!crack fic was on the verge of driving me bonkers (it's not usually a smooth transition when you start out with something wacky and wind up with seriousness), so I stepped back from it for a time. It is almost finished, just in dire need of editing.

Heehee! Tornado dropping down in the middle of a piano recital? That would basically mesh with my daydreams. I have a habit, whenever I acquire a new skill, of dreaming up a dire situation where only I can save the day!

Random Important Person 1: Horrors! National security is at risk! The terrorists are sending their demands!
Random Important Person 2: Here they are! Sweet sassy molassy! They want us to solve this differential equation!
Random Important Person 1: *gasp*
Me: *swoops in* Never fear! I took Calculus and can therefore apply the Divergence Theorem to this problem! *solves* *swoops off*
Random Important Person 2: Who was that masked goose?
Random Important Person 1: I dunno, but she forgot to carry the one. *erases*

LOL, I do that too! ♥

(Hi, I'm in your archives reading through them and scattering random comments in my wake... I do this to people occasionally. Prim and Clocket both have fascinating archives, fyi.)

Yes, Russian!Watson is absolutely adorable, from what I've seen. I really, really need to get that series.

*checks savings* Ten dollars? Just 93 to go! :D

From where are you going to buy them? :D
I bought mine surprisinly form a Finnish Russian - things selling shop where they cost 68€ which is about...90 dollars...? The mail costs weren't that big for me, though, since I live in Finland. :D
I said it was a surprise since there's hardly anything rare and cool ever to be found here becasue this country is so very small.

I'll be buying them from Ruslania (http://www.ruslania.com/context-161/entity-3/details-334/language-1.html), since it's the only place I've found that actually carries them. They were about 60 Euros, not counting shipping. Since I'm in Canada, the shipping costs really add up :(. However, 103 (Canadian) dollars isn't too bad, and I've started saving already. *hides newly-bought books* Really, I am!

That's sort of what I guessed. :D I figured there wouldn't be too many shops around that would have it.

I even checked on ebay - just HOUN. I'd rather get the whole set at once.

Hey! This is my chance to badger you with questions about the DVDs! :D Are they region-free? Are they high-quality? Are the English subtitles okay?

Date: 2007-04-17 09:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] elina-elsu.livejournal.com
Four of my DVDs worked with our DVD player which is...region 5 I guess (or region free I don't know, I'm bad at these things) and one of them for some reason was different region and didn't play on the DVD player but it worked on my laptop.

The subtitles are obviously made by a Russian person and there are a few random and minor mistakes here and there. Also some of the names of the side-characters were often written phonetically (for Russians that is) 'Moriarti' was the funniest, I think :D but generally they are very good.

I guess I'll deal with the region issues when I get it! I can live with that.

I like random subtitle errors, actually. I actually owned a set of DVDs where my poor knowledge of Japanese was a better tool than the subtitles ("We must achieve our true goats! Hahaha, his small is green."). It's a part of the experience. :D
