Is this thing on?

Everything's still under construction here, but I'm really looking forward to exploring this whole Dreamwidth thing - I'd love to meet some new people over here.
My profile covers all the basics, including the fact that I suspect I'll probably wind up using this account for posts that are primarily fannish, and, depending on how communities pop up, the content may differ considerably from my LJ account, which is why I haven't set up any cross-posting functions just yet. I like how manageable this all feels, though I suspect that'll change once I start diving back into fandom in a big way. I don't know about backing up my entire LJ, but I will eventually bring all my fanfic over here, and new fics will be crossposted for sure.
How about you? How are you planning on using your Dreamwidth account? Have you found any interesting communities out there so far? Has there been a friending meme yet? If I set one up, would people come?

Date: 2009-05-03 11:17 pm (UTC)I'm planning on keeping this account mostly fannish also, I keep finding interesting sounding comms, with no content yet (See Dangerous & Heroic Women In Fiction). I've no idea if there's been a friending meme but there should be one (If you set one up I'd come play *bats eyelashes*). I need to stop over-using ellipses in comments...

Date: 2009-05-03 11:29 pm (UTC)Well, maybe I will do the whole fannish friending meme thing, but waiting a week or two for the dust to settle is probably a good plan. ;)

Date: 2009-05-04 03:36 am (UTC)I'm really looking forward to messing around with layouts and getting a chance to start fresh with icons and whatnot. Let's see if I can avoid using up all 75 spaces in the first couple of days, here...

Date: 2009-05-04 02:31 am (UTC)Maybe I'll go set up something completely different.
I was hoping that there'd be a bit of an influx with the open beta, but it'll probably take some time.

Date: 2009-05-04 03:37 am (UTC)ifwhen Dreamwidth has enough Trek content to make it worthwhile - at least then, it'll be a whole different set of links. Theoretically speaking, anyway.I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with! :D

Date: 2009-05-04 04:09 am (UTC)It'll only end in tears.
I've been contemplating setting up a Big Finish comm, but my fear at the LJ-cloneness is there. But at the same time Big Finish is my corner of Doctor Who fandom. And then I think that maybe I want to use Dreamwidth for other fandoms since Doctor Who pretty much took over my LJ.
Bugger.

Date: 2009-05-04 03:38 am (UTC)It is such a shiny toy! I think my LJ was getting a little cluttered in terms of tags and such. It's nice to start fresh.

Date: 2009-05-04 04:32 am (UTC)You don't know me, but I've just subscribed to your journal because I recognize your name from Who fandom.
One thing I'm doing differently with Dreamwidth is also subscribing to journals of people I haven't friended on LJ, because the split of "access" and "friending" means I feel freer to do that here, where I don't have to grant access to my locked posts in order to show interest in people.
But I'm also crossposting everything, because I do want my two journals to be mirrors of each other. Dreamwidth is my backup for LJ, in anticipation of when LJ goes down forever. (I don't think that's happening soon, but I expect it to happen in the next few years)

Date: 2009-05-04 04:40 am (UTC)I've seen your name around Who fandom as well! I've also subscribed to your journal, since we seem to have a few fandoms in common. :)
The subscribe/grant access split was one of the big things that drew me to Dreamwidth in the first place - it avoids a whole lot of the awkwardness that comes up over the "friending" notion at LJ.
And yes, having a backup is definitely a sensible plan - I'll have to get cracking on backing up the things I'd actually be fussed about losing.
Thanks so much for those community links, by the way! I figured there must be something like that around by now.

Date: 2009-05-04 08:35 am (UTC)How are you going to manage trek_news across two sites? I'm wondering what to do for comicstore_news. I thought I might just make a feed for the LJ comm until there's more content here at Dreamwidth, but I'd like to include Dreamwidth if at all possible, without increasing the load on the editors, if there's a practical way to do it. Not all our editors are using Dreamwidth, though, so that makes it tricky.
Comm wise, I'm watching
