First day of work was fantabulous - I got back in touch with my inner DOS geek (looking at hail records from the early 80s, I should've figured there'd be a catch), made Excel look all prettyful, and generally learned a ton about the way we currently forecast hail.  I also determined, while fiddling with the software configurations and jotting down the odd hundred figures, that the way we forecast hail is about to change really, really significantly.  This is very weird, being on the leading edge of this stuff, but also very cool.

My 'official' schedule: For today - learn how to use the software.  For the whole sixteen weeks - analyze and record a few dozen statistics for soundings taken every day for 25 years (1960 - 1985, working backwards so if I don't get done, at least some of it will be more recent).

What I got done today: learned to use the software, installed Firefox (Aww... poor little neglected computer!  I'm here - I won't let that nasty IE hurt you anymore... *pets*) and fudged access to a couple of very secure backup servers (I'm paranoid, what can I say?), and got through two and a half years of records.  At this rate, I'll be done 16 weeks of work in two weeks.  That actually works out nicely, since one of my grad student friends will be done her field school by then and I might be able to persuade her to take me on some 'field trips' that may or may not involve stormchasing and/or cloud seeding.  After all, my professor (jeez, I keep almost calling him 'The Doctor') told me to help out the grad students wherever possible.  *whistles innocently*

I don't know why or how I work so quickly when it comes to computers - I just do.  Four hour stretch?  No problem - I just turn on some music and go on automatic.  I type at close to a hundred words per minute (faster if I'm going for less than 100% accuracy), which helps a whole heckuva lot, and the first thing I do with any new software is find out about/make up shortcut keys.  I'm also a wee bit of a sequential processor myself, which makes me a little slow on the uptake but good with computery stuff.  And such.

Speaking of 'a little slow on the uptake', I have developed the most ridiculous little crush on Harry Sullivan from the Fourth Doctor series.  I know, he's not that bright, and he's really just sort of there and doesn't do a whole lot except almost get killed a few times, but he's sweet.  And he got to wear the scarf!  Heehee.

Okay, I'm done.

Oh - and I wrote a whole two pages today!  Two pages!  *counts* Two!!!  This is far better than my atypical one, or even my habitual zero.  I'm a happy camper. Also, I came up with a wacky plot that has been done to death, but I think I can put some new twists on it.  I'm excited.

I am always so jealous of the awesome things you get to do... I hope geology turns out half as exciting and geekiful as you make meteorology sound!

On another note: HARRY! Harry is adorable. An imbecile, maybe, but a lovely imbecile. ;-) It is so sad that he died and can't guest-star on SJA...
