He's become rather used to thinking in terms of chess: he is the king, moving only slightly, waiting for the rest of the game to play itself out, and there are always sacrifices and gambits to spare.
She doesn't fit onto his board, though, the Ace up his sleeve. She's the cheat, the moment of flagrant disregard for the rulebook, the moment he stops being predictable, stops planning and acts - the moment the consequences reappear.
She accuses him of manipulating her, of treating her as a pawn, and he lists to himself just how many rules he's broken for her.
