Some time after Jo and Cliff return from the Amazon, when she's still jumping at every loud lorry, when the buildings seem to stretch in unnaturally parallel arcs across the distant sky, they step into a bookstore.
Jo leafs through a few bestsellers while Cliff sets off in search of some rare tome or other; she isn't at all surprised when he returns empty-handed. "They didn't have it," he says.
"It's a bookstore," says Jo, grinning in spite of his dejected expression. "Coming in here and expecting to find the one book you've been looking for is like-" She pauses, swallows, doesn't say that it's like travelling with the Doctor, hoping for Metebelis Three and getting all the adventures in between.
He smiles and rests a hand on her shoulder. "Doesn't mean I have to stop looking, does it? The book's out there somewhere. We've only to find it."
