Title: A Game of Memory

Word Count: 334
Rating: G
Characters: Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith

The Doctor opens the doors, and for a moment Sarah pauses at the entrance, peering back at him. "Are you sure it's safe?" she says.

He grins, pushes his hat to a rakish angle, and jogs over to stand with her at the doorway. "Not in the least," he says, and steps out into a field of flowers and long grasses. "I've never been to Armellius Four."

She follows, suddenly hesitant. "Doctor-"

"It looks rather nice, actually," he says, and turns, staring up at the sky, his scarf forming a streaming circle around him. "I suppose that means we should expect uprisings and invasions on the horizon, but you can't win everything."

"Doctor," Sarah says again, but he's already striding off across the field, sidestepping patches of flowers, and she has to run to keep up with him.

"It gets a bit tiring," he says, "all this wandering around places I've been a hundred times or more. Expectations, you know, that sort of thing. And there's always the risk of temporal anomaly-"

"Doctor," Sarah says, and this time he stops and turns to look at her. "Doctor, I've been here before."

He pauses, blinking. "Well," he says, "it does look rather like Earth-"

"No," says Sarah, "I mean I've been to Armellius Four." He opens his mouth to speak again, and she says, quickly: "With you. With the other you."

He freezes, just for a moment, staring over her shoulder at the horizon, and when he glances back his eyes are still more distant. "You're right," he says, in a voice strangely devoid of emotion. "I suppose that's what happens, then. The old memories get a bit muddled up."

Sarah hesitates, then pats him awkwardly on the shoulder. "It happens to the best of us," she says, and he grins at her and suggests they return to the TARDIS. She doesn't ask why, but as the dematerialisation echoes through the console room, she wonders if she may as well be travelling with a stranger.

Oh, that's wonderful. I've been thinking muchly on Three-Sarah vs Four-Sarah lately, and this just plays right into it. Beautifully done. Squee!
