"Well," said Fitz, staring up at the sky. "I guess this must be some sort of hellish Planet of the Nasty Monsters, then."
The Doctor paused in the act of locking the TARDIS door, glanced out at the shimmering, peaceful ocean, and frowned. "What makes you think that?"
"Well, it's too perfect, right?" Fitz scooped up a flat looking stone and made a game try at skipping it across the water. With a single mournful plink, it sank. "There's got to be something lurking. Always is."
Grinning, the Doctor walked up to stand beside him. "I believe you're getting cynical, Fitz."
"Me, cynical?" Fitz smirked. "Next thing, you'll be calling me sarcastic."
The Doctor strolled down the beach, closer to the water. Fitz considered informing him that his shoes would be full of sand and water in no time, but assumed that would only provide added incentive.
"Sometimes, Fitz," the Doctor said, "things are exactly the way they look on the outside. Why can't a calm-looking paradise be just that?"
Fitz raised his hands. "All right, all right. Quiet evening on the beach. I can do that."
The Doctor crouched down to retrieve a seashell from the sand. "Glad to hear it. Illetrius IX is well known for its silent nights. I thought we could use a break-"
A howl unlike any Fitz had ever heard - and he'd heard a few howls in his time - split the silence.
The Doctor looked at Fitz. Fitz looked at the Doctor. "Or," the Doctor said, a bit sheepishly, "there's a faint chance that this is Illetrius VI."
Fitz was already making his way back to the TARDIS. "Which isn't well-known for its silent nights?"
Another screeching howl; the Doctor jogged after Fitz, unlocking the TARDIS in record time. "Well," he said, "sort of. Mostly it's just silent because the massive blood-sucking earthworms have eaten everything noisy."
"Massive blood-sucking earthworms," said Fitz, and wished he'd thought to light a ciggie while they were out of the TARDIS. "Doctor, you take me to the nicest places."
