Word Count: 100
Rating: G
Characters: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Third Doctor
Author's Note: Set immediately prior to Inferno.

"Look, the trouble with you, Brigadier," the Doctor says, squinting at the switches and lights of the great lump of metal he's fished from the inside of the police box, "is that you have this dreadful tendency to ignore what's right in front of your face."

The Brigadier sighs, taps his swagger stick against the lab bench, and watches the Doctor, bent over the controls and bits and pieces of some alien technology. The machine, whatever it may be, is utterly silent. Dead, and yet the Doctor keeps tinkering.

"You don't see it either, Doctor," the Brigadier says, and leaves.

Any story starting "Look, the trouble with you, Brigadier," is sure to win, but the stab of poignancy at the end lifts it above the common throng. The poor Doctor was a bit dense at first, wasn't he?

Oh, I like this. Am very fond of drabbles, especially when done so beautifully. The scene is described perfectly in my head and I can hear them having that exchange.
