Further to the Gmail glitch
Feb. 28th, 2011 07:45 amStill locked out of my disabled account, and it doesn't look good - according to Gmail, the glitch I mentioned earlier was for accounts that were completely reset (i.e., people logged in to see the "Welcome to Gmail" screen), not disabled. No word yet on whether they've managed to restore anything for people who lost their e-mails and documents.
So! Let this be a cautionary tale, and a reminder of a very important axiom: never keep anything in just one place that you can't do without. (I'm lucky enough to have backed up all my e-mails and such.) And do keep in mind that many sites' Terms and Conditions (including Gmail's) reserve the right to cancel your account at any time, for whatever reason, without justification.
If you keep things on Google Docs, or if you have Blogger account access via google, or if you rely on Google Calendar to plan your day, you should probably consider diversifying, because a glitch like this can take out everything like that. Same goes for any site where you're keeping a lot of important data.
