Pick a paragraph (or any passage less than 500 words) from any fanfic I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

I can't promise wit or insight, but what I can definitely promise is, um. Words.

Mostly I want other people to post this so I can comment, because I love finding out about how all you talented folks write fanfic.

Yes I know a drabble is the entire fic but here: (It's less than 500 words!)

"It's okay," says a new voice. "C'mon."

She takes the outstretched hand - familiar calluses, gunmetal under pliant skin - and allows him to pull her from the cupboard. He's not particularly tall, or short, or much of anything except the worried glance he shoots her and the spots of blood spattered on the shoulder of his expensive suit.

Slowly, slowly she turns, sees Jake - her husband's killer - dead on the floor.

"I got him," says the new man, as though that should be reassuring.

He smiles, then, and she wonders whether she should have taken her chances with the bad guy.

I'm pretty sure this is less than 500 words. From "Five Lives The Master Saved":

As she turns, she nudges a rack of half-full test tubes with her elbow, and they teeter at the edge of the table for a moment before falling, shattering all over the floor, and she screams as the chemicals mix and mingle, and fumes rise, and they're both choking, suddenly-

And as she turns, she nudges a rack of half-full test tubes with her elbow-

As she turns, she nudges-

As she turns-

The roaring of the warning signal on the temporal monitor is enough to snap him back to himself, and he reaches/reached/is reaching for the dial to slow everything down, to manipulate the time differential enough to enable him to capture this disappearing moment, to take all the measurements necessary-

He turns the dial, and it's the work of a moment to reach over and shift the test tubes just slightly, so that as she turns, slowly, slowly, she turns and nothing happens.

The roaring stops; the time storm has shifted its position, has dissipated in the face of this impossible transfer of energy in infinitesimal time, and he laughs - this is the key they'd been seeking all along, the way to fight back, to change.

Bit from the end of Foreign Correspondence.

"I worry, sometimes," said David, years later, standing with her in the street, watching old-fashioned fireworks explode overhead. He glanced down at her, stroked her cheek with his thumb, and she couldn't help seeing the wrinkles at the corners of his eyes, the grey in his hair. "I worry that you'll keep chasing him and leave me behind."

She caught his hand in hers, planted a kiss in the palm and watched him until he broke into a self-conscious grin. "I don't need to chase him anymore," she said, and his smile broadened with understanding. "He's found me."

And the city in itself seemed to be holding its breath, watching the fireworks, equal parts reflective and celebratory, and Susan smiled, giddy with the knowledge that the words on the walls were for her.

From Argumentum ad Metam:

Despite herself, Jo felt a pang of pity. "And- and so they destroyed everyone around you? That's horrible!"

Laura shrugged. "It was crude," she said. "They thought humanity was much less advanced, that we'd only discovered the most basic ways to be frightened." She crossed her arms. "I communed with their leader, took him into me. He helped me discover the potential within me, taught me advanced hypnosis in an instant. And he discovered that we have the capacity for fear of a much more complex nature, beyond mere instinct. Humanity is much more talented at fearing its own capacity for evil than at fearing evil itself."

"So you-" Jo paused, searching for words, thinking of the ambulance, the flood in Laura's house, the gunshot echoing again and again. "-you just create these terrible illusions for people, to-to test their mettle?"

"No," said Laura, "I do not create. I have some knowledge of how the dreaming mind works, though, and it's simple enough to trigger-" She waved a finger. "-to trigger a reaction that will start a nightmare. And it's ideal, much better than the Karnim anticipated; deep, instinctual fear without the necessity for any messy deaths."

Jo felt her hands clench into fists at her sides. "And what about Marty?"

Laura paused, and again her voice took on the child-like timbre. "Marty?"

Seizing the moment, Jo spun around, lunged for the gun and brought it to bear on Laura.

-the floor crumbled away beneath her, setting her stumbling for balance lest she fall-

"It's not real," she snapped, holding the gun out at arm's length-

-an explosion rocked the restaurant, and there were shards of glass from the window flying at her, ready to cut, to pierce, to-

Jo released the safety catch on the revolver. "I can resist it now," she said. "Stop."

Laura frowned, and Jo nearly lost her footing at the sudden relief of pressure on her mind, her body, all around her. "What's strange about this moment," said Laura, "is that you're really more afraid to pull that trigger than to do anything else."

Er. It's long; hope that's okay.
