If you get that reference, you deserve a cookie.  A big one.  With sprinkles.  Or chocolate chips.  Possibly both.

So I just finished reading "The City of the Dead" by Lloyd Rose - it's the, uh, 49th book of the Eighth Doctor Adventures novels by BBC Books.  (Hush, I've had a bit of spare time on my hands lately.  Um.  I mean. *cough*  No, I didn't read three of these novels today between studying the evolution of sonata form and listening over and over to the first movement of Mozart's 40th Symphony (because, let's face it, that piece never fails to rock my socks).  Why would I ever do that?)

...okay, so it's probably a lucky thing that I've taught myself to speed-read.  (I picked up the habit out of necessity when our family first started pre-ordering Harry Potter books.  When the book came in the mail, I was allowed first dibs on it, but only if I could finish it that evening.  So, yes.  Read quickly and retain all the salient information.  Of course, I'm too paranoid to try it on a textbook for school, for fear I'd skim over a big section that says "Hello, I'm your final exam".  That would be icky.  Casual reading, though?  I'm game.  I just have to do it in one sitting or I lose track of everything. Which, y'know, explains the dozens of unfinished (mostly borrowed) books lying around my desk at the moment.  Eep. :D)

Anyway.  No more random parantheticals.  Book, right.

I really enjoyed it - it had just the right amount of utter surrealness and a great sense of humour and a twist near the end I actually hadn't even considered.  Also?  References to Buffy, P.G. Wodehouse and possibly even MST3K (it took me a while to figure out why I squeed when I read the word "interoceter".  Use only genuine interoceter parts!).  Awesome.

Turns out the author also wrote for the TV series "Homicide: Life on the Streets", which is a great show - and she wrote "Caerdroia", the Eighth Doctor audio I keep rambling about.  Eeenteresting.

She's also American, which explains the sort of weird this-isn't-quite-Doctor-Who disconnect I got with this novel (and "Caerdroia" as well), but it's just so dang fun (when it's not horribly dark) that I don't mind a wee bit of out-of-characterness in terms of speech patterns.  But hey, this is Eight we're talking about.  You're sort of working with a blank slate anyway.  And, um, amnesiac!Eight's probably no better.  Probably worse, come to think of it.

I'm still having trouble getting a real handle on Anji's character, but I think I can see where they're going with her. And Fitz never fails to be awesome.

So, yes, I've been sitting in my room and reading and studying all sorts of awesome things, but my default mood this weekend appears to be "grumpy".  It's annoying and results in angsty LJ-posting, which is always awkward considering my weird little rule that I never delete posts, no matter how ill-advised they may be.  Bits of my brain have completely shut down, but I think I'm starting to snap out of it.  I didn't fence all last week and my sore ankle meant I didn't do a lot of walking, either - lack of exercise usually gets to me more than anything else.

This heat's making me go bonkers.  Well, you know.  Bonkerser.  Um.  More bonkers.  If that's possible.  I can't sleep well, and when I do, I have no idea where I am when I wake up.  Way too early this morning, I actually stumbled out of bed with the half-formed idea of moving the doorway over to the opposite wall where it should be.  :D

Didn't help that, around three this morning, I got rained on.  Window open + raging thunderstorm + fan blowing air/rain from the window into my face at high speed = sopping wet me, wondering what the heck's going on.

On the other hand, it was a lot less hot.  I think I'll forget to close my window again tonight. :D

I think I'll treat my roommates to ice cream tomorrow - those insane five-dollar cones with cherries or marshmallows or gummy bears mixed in.  Mmm.

Little slow on the uptake, but we're going to see Order of the Phoenix this Wednesday (if I can sneak away from work). Huzzah! I love going to the movies here - a population over a million means we've got a pretty nice selection of theatres (unlike my hometown of 80 000, which has three mostly-identical theatres with tiny screens).  Also, the seats at our favourite theatre are comfy.  And they've got them spaced so you can sort of rock back and forth without annoying the big burly guy behind you.  Always a good thing!

A final note: I strongly dislike falling into routines.  During school, the courseload's so variable and the homework's so different from week to week that I can usually avoid the feeling of repetition, if only by experimenting with a different studying technique for each exam.  Summer?  Not so easy.

Now.  Let's have a little rain, please? :D

Oh, I'm sorry you've been feeling badly, dear. If only there was a way I could help... DO YOU WANT ME TO BEAT SOMEONE UP FOR YOU?!!

... Actually, you have a sword and know how to use it. My presence would be pretty excessive. Erm. I know!

*gives cookies*

Better, eh? Eh?

Enjoy Harry Potter when you get the chance to see it (Quite fun, if I do say so myself), and I think we should both beat weather with a stick. Then we'll order it to give us rain. Mawhahaha!

*cackles evilly into the distance as figure slowly fades*

LET US BEAT UP THE WEATHER!!

*pulls out baseball bat*

Um. Wait. It's just occurred to me that this weapon is extremely fitting, considering the, um, specific and evocatively-named size of hail the area had yesterday.

*cowers*

And, yes. I am feeling much better today! I had a sit-down with my roommates and worked stuff out, then gave myself a stern talking-to and figured out just what was bugging me and took steps to fix it. So huzzah! :D
