Spoilers for the series four episode "Silence in the Library".

It's not just the smell, not really.

They've tried a million alternatives to the written word, to the dogeared page and the cracked spine, but it all comes back to this, dusty and musty and always, always reverent.

In spite of himself, he reaches out.

"It's against the rules," she says. "Your rules."

A hundred million alternatives, and it's a bundle of paper he releases to her. Tangible, primitive.

Because that's the thing, then, isn't it? All those e-books and holographs and bibliotech, and there's one thing they just haven't got.

Stands to reason: every book has a cover.

I know! The first time we got a clear look at it, well. Instant merchandising!

*nods* Definitely - the Beeb are slow if they don't bring one out. (Mind you, there was supposedly going to be a limited edition of the Journal of Impossible Things, but it never happened to my knowledge.)

Ooh, pretty! :D

Also, that diary is made of WIN. I want one. :P It reminded me of the Journal of Impossible Things, but that looked differently, didn't it? Or not? Argh. Confusion galore.

Anyway. I am SO looking forward to next week's episode.

Thanks! :D

I believe so! I think the Journal of Impossible Things looked much more like, well, an ordinary journal. It's been a while since I watched the episode, though, so what do I know? ;)

Anyway. I am SO looking forward to next week's episode.

Oh, me too! I'm working this weekend (again), so I probably won't get to watch it until Sunday. But still! Exciting.

Oh, lovely! This whole episode played to my book fetish so well. If they don't make Tardis diaries, they're missing out on a mint.

Interesting- 'covered' books do have that extra weight to them (I think I've been going around calling it L-space, recently). Although I am just as content with an electronic or oral version of a story; I guess in terms of, er, L-space, what lends the 'curvature' is the story and the more permanent versions 'curve space' more...tangibly, like in a library.

Thanks for the insightful comment! That is a super-awesome way of looking at it. I would mention it to my parents the librarians, but they're sort of sciencephobic. Hee!

Gosh! I completely forgot to tell you how much I love this fic!
...There, done.

So, this is kind of early because I probably won't be doing anything in the end anyway, but do you mind if I read this drabble as a tryout for my supah podfic project of doom?

(I'd read some of my own, but I have this tendency to positively hate to re-read anything I wrote. Combined with the fact that I hate llistening to my own voice, I'd never get around to reading anything at all)
