Characters: Susan, David
The music is wild, fast, impetuous, a dozen other things, though it seems determined to stray as far from a fixed rhythm as possible. Moving bodies, dark smears against the bonfire, are still shifting in time to some inaudible beat, removed from the music and yet separate, alive.
Susan huddles deeper into her coat, and for an instant David's hand rests on her forehead, almost proprietal in the brief act of tenderness. "You're so quiet," he says. "This is a celebration."
She smiles and takes his hand. "Give me time," she says. "And I'll dance with the best of them."
