Jo winced and huddled into her coat; it seemed like inadequate protection against the terrible cold picking up, the winds that shrieked and howled in her ears like someone mourning or frightened or both.

"Come on, Jo," he said, and reached his hand out to her - his bare hand, rimed with frost, as though it were nothing, as though it were perfectly ordinary.

He was wild and strange against the whorls of snow, part of the storm, and as she took his hand she wondered whether the gloves would be enough to shield her.
