Donna glanced up at the purple light suffusing the tent-like ceiling that extended, massive and incongruous, over the glittering buildings of Potsdamer Platz. She felt rather silly, gawping at something like that, but about half the people hanging about - the tourists, the ones who weren't eating dinner or swapping stories - seemed as awed as she was.
"So?" said the Doctor, sitting across from her, and grinned. "What do you think?"
"Well," said Donna, and wasn't sure where to go from there. "I mean, it's Germany, isn't it? I've never been to Germany."
The Doctor smirked. "You'd never been to Quasar 29 either, last I checked."
She swatted his arm. "I'm serious, though. This is weird, it's something I could've done myself - well, could've done if I'd had the money - just up and headed to Berlin for the weekend. And here we are."
"Hm," said the Doctor noncommittally, and followed her next furtive gaze to the ceiling. "They've got a theatre here, one of those Imax ones where you can see every pore on the actors' faces. You know, most races have to really work at discovering absurd pastimes, but it seems to come naturally to you lot."
She felt as though she should feel vaguely insulted on behalf of the entire human race, and made the second swat at his arm a bit more forceful. "That's my planet you're insulting, sunshine," she said, and he adopted a wounded look, rubbing his arm. "Anyway, it's just strange, is all. Like showing up a few years forward or back."
"Plausible," the Doctor supplied, and she tried valiantly to come up with a more accurate word to top that, but eventually had to concede defeat with a nod.
"It's weird, anyway," she pronounced, and got to her feet with a sigh. "Like being a ghost or something, when my real self's back in London."
He didn't stand, stared up at her, his smile fading. "She might not be, you know," he said. "Your real self. Maybe she's still- still travelling. With me."
Donna blinked at him, and in the time it took her to start to form a reaction to that, the Doctor had bounded to his feet and snagged her by the hand. "Ah, but Berlin! There are much more interesting times to visit - 2148, for instance! What a year that was-"
And he was prattling again, dragging her along with him amid amused laughs from the crowds around them, already thinking of the next adventure, and Donna found her smile growing the more he spoke.
Before they left, though, before they flew off to get sidetracked saving a planet from the Machiavellian machinations of a group of colonists, before everything changed all over again, Donna promised herself one thing: no matter what happened, no matter when she stopped being a ghost and went back to being Donna Noble, she'd save up her money. She'd save, and she'd go on holiday like anyone else, travel the continent, have her own sorts of adventures, the kind that involved peculiar strangers and late trains instead of lives and betrayals and deaths.
"You're starting to enjoy this, Donna," he said, grinning back at her as they dematerialised.
"It's only just begun," she said, and they disappeared.

Because it's such a perfect moment of vulnerability, and so quickly, perfectly pushed aside.
And she called him "sunshine", which pretty much made my day. ;)

Date: 2008-03-27 05:24 pm (UTC)1)She felt as though she should feel vaguely insulted on behalf of the entire human race, and made the second swat at his arm a bit more forceful. Lol. ILU, Donna.
2)"She might not be, you know," he said. "Your real self. Maybe she's still- still travelling. With me." Aww. Aw, Doctor. *hugs him*
3)He's changing the way she wants to live her life! She wants adventures, now! But real life adventures, being Donna Noble! I just - *flails a bit* - I love this best of all, when the companions go "Thank you for the adventures, Doctor, I had a fantastic time, but now I go back to my life - which is different, because I'm different after meeting you, and thanks for that, too." And they go and have fantastic lives and they miss him, of course, but they are happy. Which is totally what happens, in my head, to Ian and Barbara and Liz and Harry and Sarah Jane(sorta) and Romana and Nyssa and Mel and Mickey and I'll shut up now. *g* Just, yeah. I like that Donna's enjoying it.
Things I do not love:
1)Why is it not April yet. WHY, I ask you.
