"Not even once?" Ian raised an eyebrow and grinned.

Barbara shrugged, pulling her cardigan closer around her shoulders and shifting against the wall. The floor was cold, and by no means the most comfortable place to be sitting, but she had to admit that it was preferable to wandering around looking for the Doctor and Vicki. Her aching feet would never forgive her.

"I was never particularly interested in ghost stories," Barbara said, and shrugged. "I mean, I've probably heard a few here and there, but-"

"Oh," said Ian, and his grin widened. "I see."

She scowled. "It wasn't that I was frightened," she protested, realising as she did just how defensive that sounded.

"Of course not," said Ian, eyes twinkling. "I suppose you were too mature for that sort of thing. I don't imagine much frightens you, anyway."

Barbara paused. "Well," she said, voice shaking, "that massive Dalek behind you might give me a run for my money."

He turned, an expression of utmost dread on his face, at about the same time she burst out laughing. "All right," he said, adopting a wounded look. "Very funny, Barbara."

She grinned, and he smiled back, but after a few moments it sank in that they were still in an unknown house, and the Doctor and Vicki were still unaccounted for. "Well," Ian said, and got to his feet with an exaggerated grimace, "I suppose we'd best head after them again."

"That's right," she said, and took the hand he offered, pulling herself up.

"You know," Ian said, as they walked down endless shadowy corridors, "ghost stories aren't all about scaring kids."

"And schoolteachers," Barbara pointed out, with a grin.

"And schoolteachers," Ian amended, and nudged her elbow. "They're not just about frightening people, though; they're about teaching us to be braver."

"You must have read rather a lot of ghost stories, then," said Barbara, and he laughed.

"Sometimes I think I'm living one," he said.

Hee! I love these moments you can do with so few words and that are so true to character, and that manage to make me squee madly. Ian teases her, and Barabara fools him, and then he helps her up, and then she calls him brave! HOW ARE THEY SO CUTE.

Oh, Barbara. Oh, Ian. I'm sorry, I can't be any more coherent than that, and anyway, wondygal said it much better. But d'awww. So perfectly in-character for both of them. I rather like seeing them tease each other; there's not enough of that in fandom.
