This one's a bit unexpected, since I'd completely forgotten about it until recently, but more recs can never be a bad thing, right?

It's a fanvid, too, which bears a little explanation: much as I enjoy the idea of fanvids, I find it next to impossible to sit through one in its entirety. Maybe I was spoiled by the ages I spent in Anime fandom - attending fancy-schmancy AMV panels at conventions and all sorts (zounds, a little-know fact!) - but my recent fandoms have been quite disappointing on the vid front: they often wind up with repetitive, terribly long clips with no connection to the music, or (worse!), painfully overt attempts to be clever in terms of following the lyrics. This is my frame-of-mind, the context coming into this. And this is one of many, many fanvids that've proved me wrong!

(And, of course, be sure let the creator know if you've enjoyed the vid!)

Rec: The Black Parade
Fandom: Doctor Who (All of Doctor Who, my friends, new and old.)
Characters: Everybody. Um. Yes. Everybody.
Creator: [livejournal.com profile] calapine, whom I fangirl unabashedly and am too shy to friend, yes.
Creator's Summary: "Everything ends...and while there's life there's..."

If you haven't seen any of [livejournal.com profile] calapine's fanvids before, I envy you - you've got a heckuva treat coming: old and new school cracktasticness, adorableosity, and several other brilliant things that would require me to make up more new words. These vids are brilliantly edited: rather than trying to match the clips with the lyrics, which can often come off amateurish and awkward, Calapine has actually paid attention to the rhythm of the music, the energy of it - characters move in time with the music, run (or swordfight) when it swells, turn when it slows. It's, well, fantastic is what it is. Since this is something of an epic song, "The Black Parade" shows this talent off to the utmost.

Which isn't to say that there's no lyric-matching going on, no! And that's the brilliant thing - in both this one and "What About Everything" (another highly recommended all-of-Who vid, go watch), we've got stories, whole character arcs, crammed into five-second flashes that fit perfectly with the lyrics. You watch and it's all "Wait, how did my mind just do that crazy thing?" Whole series evoked in a few seconds. That takes talent.

And this is a video that improves markedly each time I watch it, having seen a little more Who (over 75% finished Classic Who now, alack and alas!). Bits that seemed blissfully cheerful get a healthy dose of melancholy, second-long flashes take on spectacular new meaning. "The Black Parade" is terribly sniffle-worthy at several parts (the start, obviously, but everything with Two and Jamie and Zoe!), but it's got such energy, such optimism to it - and a lot of love's obviously gone into it.

To sum up: if you've never seen Classic Who, this might just encourage you to do so. Likewise with New Who. And if you just want a clever glimpse at this strange little TV show everyone's on about, enjoy. Just be sure to bookmark it - you'll want to watch it again, I guarantee.
