At the time, I had been bemused by this new facet to his character, but in the years after the Falls, I came to realise that this delicate specificity of his impassioned speech was merely another facet of the sparkling gemstone of his intellect. The rose was only a puzzle that teased his faculties, that drew out his natural curiosity.
“John?” Mary smiled, took my hand in hers.
“We have much to hope from the flowers,” I said, and she understood.
