Weather Geekery
May. 31st, 2007 10:36 amWow - it's gonna be in the low thirties (mid-eighties) all week. So... sunny. *squints* If we don't get some convective instability soon, I'm gonna go bonkers! Terrible dewpoints (three degrees?), so, despite the heat, extremely tiny probability of precipitation. Which means no thunderstorms. Which makes me sad.
(See, I was sort of excited about staying up here during the summer, because this particular city has interesting weather. In fact, it's the site of Canada's most severe tornado back in 1987. So far, we've barely had rain. And our dewpoints of three degrees make it terribly dry - that tornado had dewpoints of 18-20.)
For reasons passing my understanding, the international airport's actually reporting steady rain. Um. Not even a cloud outside, here.Ooh, maybe the rain's just in the one spot, and it's falling up, and they're about to get zapped to the moon!
Oh, gosh, I'm talking about the weather again, aren't I? Heeheehee.
Random new!Doctor Who note - just rewatched the whole first season (which was insanely fun to do, now that I actually have a clue what's going on with Jack - I think I must've missed something significant the first time around). I really loved "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances" this time around (last time, they were at the tail end of a nine-episode marathon, so I was having a bit of trouble keeping awake). All the banana jokes? The sonic screwdriver jokes? (And then, of course, the pool-our-assets-in-the-face-of-danger conversation: "Well, I have a banana, and in a pinch you could put up some cabinets.") The awesome sort of OT3-vibe? The creepy-ass little kid with the gas mask and sing-song voice? The "everybody lives" speech? Awesome. Just plain awesome.
This morning as I walked into one of the buildings on campus, I heard this little singsongy "Maaama" in exactly the same freakin' voice. Needless to say, my brain was all "DO NOT WANT" and I scurried away.
In fact, this morning was a little weird. The trees in the back-alleys I cut through have all decided to do the creepy "oh, now it's summer" thing where they're just barely budding one day, and the next they've expanded so you've got a canopy over your head. The elm at my parents' house did this on a scary scale - overnight, there were branches scraping the windows. The tree's not even particularly close to the house! It just sprouted... out, I guess. Made for some tricky pruning this year, though (especially with all the Dutch Elm Disease Prevention bylaws and whatnot).
I also got sprayed by something as I passed a landscaping truck. I hope they were just watering the trees next to me and not, um, DDTing or something. *wince* That woke me up in a hurry, though.
Either tomorrow or on Saturday, I've decided to take a few hours and go out to the mall. Not a mall, the mall, because in this city there's just one mall that everyone knows - it's the biggest in North America, believe it or not. And does it ever have candy. And ice cream. Mmm. It also just happens to have a Sherlock Holmes pub, which I have yet to check out. That could be fun! Ooh, and comic book stores of geekery... and an Asian superstore with plenty of neat candies and fruits and veggies!
My general approach to malls is as follows: Food food food food comics food food food books food food. I like my food. I once had three ice cream cones in the space of two hours, just because they were there. I might want to leave my debit card at home, this time around - avoid temptation.
(Alas, since two of my pairs of jeans have become unwearable due to run-ins with various pointy objects (including a garbage can - long story), I might actually have to visit a clothing store. Which takes valuable time away from food!! *cries*)
The trick is to time it so that roommates don't think I'm ditching 'em. Might have to wait until Sunday... or leave work early on Friday and be sneaky. Hm.
Well, having accomplished absolutely nothing this morning, I think it's time I took a break for lunch.
