This has been going around quite a lot, judging by how often it popped up on the [livejournal.com profile] who_daily watchlist today, and who am I to argue with the masses?

Post, in your journal, a rec list singling out the best of your own fics. Tell people why you are especially proud of those particular fics, and of course provide links to them. Yes, that's right, this step involves self-promotion. How else are people supposed to find your fics? List as many or as few as you feel appropriate to represent your body of writing.

Also include a paragraph about the types of fics you most enjoy reading or are most interested in reading in the immediate future -- favorite tropes, pairings, fandoms, whatever. If you're particularly lazy, link to that Dear Writer post you did for whatever holiday exchange comes to mind.

Reply to other rec posts (like for example the one you are reading now) by reccing a fic of your own that might fit the original poster's tastes, or that you'd just really like them to read, because maybe they don't know they'd like it.

I have a ridiculous amount of fanfic hereabouts (148 fics/drabbles stretching over thirteen fandoms and three years), and while I think some of the drabbles have decent ideas going for them, I tried to focus on longer fics here, especially the ones where I jumped out of my comfort zone and tried something new, because those are always my favourites. The list is also skewed toward fics I've written more recently, which I assume is a good thing.

Fandom: Danger Man/The Prisoner

The Cold (John Drake; PG; ~2400 words)
This was for Yuletide one year, and it was a ton of fun to write, not least because I wound up getting to be the first one to post a fic in the "Danger Man" section on the Yuletide website. That's when you know you're dealing with a tiny fandom.
I like this one because, well, I'm a sucker for Cold War-era spy stories, and after some pretty light "Man from UNCLE" stuff, I was itching to go for something on the darker side. It's got three parts, which I like - the first from the tail end of an episode in which it seemed to me that Drake's confidence in the organization was badly shaken, and the second just being an imagined scene in which that shaken confidence would have still more trouble finding its foundations. The third scene is what I'm most proud of - Drake's in a position where he's got the strongest appearance of faith in what he's doing, and yet it's also the scene in which we have the segue into the world of "The Prisoner".

Fandom: Doctor Who

What the Thunder Said (Third Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Liz Shaw, John Benton; PG-13; ~4500 words)
The "Inferno"-verse seemed like an ideal playground, but at the time, I was pretty much exclusively writing fluff, so this was a really, really dramatic departure from what I was comfortable writing - it stayed on my hard drive for months before I decided to post it. I still maintain that it's over-written and over-wrought, but it's got some lines in it that I like quite a lot, and I think the melodrama kinda fits the whole doomed-world mentality. Plus, it has Liz dumping a pint of ale over the Doctor's head.

Le quattro stagioni (The Four Seasons) (Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Harry Sullivan, K-9, Romana; PG; ~2200 words)
Character stuff! I like character stuff. This one's all about the structure - one section for each season, and I like that there's more than just the physical seasons tying in with that motif. I love writing Four-era banter, and this fic is packed with it. Also, Harry Sullivan and an alien eggbeater.

Turning and Turning (Rory Williams; PG; ~3700 words)
Aha! Something from the latest era, finally - this was a fic I knew I'd write as soon as I watched the finale, and while it's a little rough around the edges, I like the way it flows, and I think Rory's voice comes through pretty well throughout.
Mostly, though, I like that I wrote a fic that contains the phrase "Rory spent most of the sixties as a vigilante superhero." I feel like I've fulfilled a lifelong dream or something.

Into Cool Night (Rescued from Rainy Dawn) (Donna Noble, Eighth Doctor; G; ~1300 words)
Another finale-fic, this one done right on the tail of series four. Everyone was writing fixit fic for Donna, and as I mentioned above, I'm definitely not immune to the voice of the interwebs. I like that her voice is strong throughout, recognizably Donna from the series and the old Donna from before the series, and I like that I got to put a spin on it that nobody else was doing at the time (that I know of, anyway!). And I'm always a fan of crossing eras when it comes to Doctor Who fic.

Fandom: Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Keeps Raining All the Time (Napoleon Solo, Illya Kuryakin, Alexander Waverly; PG-13; ~4700 words)
I'm a genfic writer who's terrified of writing plot. That's kind of awful, isn't it? This was my biggest attempt to get over that anxiety - I wanted to set myself a cliché (good guy has to go undercover to work for the baddies) and find a way to twist the plot to get myself out of it. There are several things I like very much about this fic, and overall, I think it's my most successful execution of plot to date. Hurrah!

Fandom: Star Trek Deep Space Nine

The Life of Significant Soil (Kira Nerys, ensemble; PG-13; ~15,000 words)
If the above is my best plot-driven fic, I think this is one of my best character-driven fics. I'm a huge fan of nearly every character in this fandom, but Kira Nerys consistently tops the list, due in large part to the fantastic character arc she gets over the course of the series. I was leaping quite a bit out of my comfort zone by tackling the issue of faith, but it was always the one major aspect of her character that I was most curious about, and getting a chance to explore it throughout the series was a great feeling. I also got to throw in at least three homages to tie-in novels/short stories, which was fun.

Fandom: Star Trek XI

Chaotic Systems (McCoy, Spock Prime, Kirk; PG; ~2200 words)
This was far and away my most-reviewed fic ever, because of the timing (I posted it shortly after the movie came out, just when the fandom was exploding), and because I went for an angle that hadn't been explored yet in fanfic - Spock Prime and McCoy interacting. I like almost everything about this one.

Fandom: Stargate SG-1

Future Tense (Cassandra Fraiser, ensemble; PG-13; ~10,000 words)
Another epic, series-spanning character study - I think this fic is possibly the strongest I've ever written. That's probably a little odd, considering it's ten thousand words about a character who appeared in all of four episodes, but I think I managed to bridge the gap between her appearances as a scared kid and as a bratty teenager, and I hope I managed to show something about the other characters as a result. The biggest risk I took with this one was having bits of myself sneak in here and there, and deciding to let them stick around.

And now for the last bit! I've been weirdly picky about fic lately, so I'd love to have some new recs, just for a chance to have something to read. I'm most fond of genfic, or stories in which the romantic relationship isn't the sole focus of the fic - don't get me wrong, I often enjoy het and slash and variations thereupon, but it's not something I'll necessarily seek out unless it's via a rec. I love adventure stories with twisty, turny plots. I love little introspective pieces that have that one moment where your whole perception of the character gets skewed. I love stories that deal with what-ifs. I love fics that don't just wallow in a sameness of feeling, that have the characters evolve and change and grow.

Right now, I'm most into DS9 and TNG fic of all kinds, but particularly awesome recs from any of my previous fandoms - or even for fandoms I'm not at all familiar with - are always welcomed. Hit me with your best shots, flist!

Dude! I think the only thing I've posted in the last forever that you didn't beta first was that ridiculous Super!Rose AU. So, in the spirit of the meme, I suppose that is my rec.

Outside of the spirit of the meme, YAY FOR RE-READING YOUR OLDER WHO FIC. I particularly love What the Thunder Said and Le quattro stagioni; they make me nostalgic for the days when I first read them, backing when I first started watching Classic Who.

Oh, I liked "What the Thunder Said"! Especially the explanation of why Liz left - it's part of my personal canon now.

(Okay, I like most of the stuff you write. *g*)

Let's see: recs. I so wish I could write longer plotty stuff, or complex character development either...

Hmm. Have you seen my drabble Insensitive? It's Sapphire and Steel; nice little introspective piece, and while I don't know if it changes anyone else's view of Steel, it certainly changed mine when I got the idea to write it!

In the Who!fic category - let's see, Balm of Hurt Minds is one of my favorite little Three!exile pieces. It's all about why he claimed Time Lords don't sleep.

And One More Time is probably my favorite of all my crackfics. It has the Thirteenth Doctor explaining to Sarah Jane why he isn't out of regenerations yet; got recced on Calufrax, that one did, so you might have seen it already.

I'm about halfway through S7 of DS9 now and I need to re-read The Life of Significant Soil then as there were several things I didn't get the first time through. And once again I'm reminded that I never got around to reading Future Tense. Open that in a tab again, although I'm pretty sure it's languishing in my Read It Later.

As for recs, hmm, let's see. Faith Lost is an Erimem fic that pretty much spoils all of The Coming of the Queen so if you have any intentions of reading that it's probably best to not read the fic.

The one where Jack and Vala ended up on Fandom Wank does what it says on the tin. And is also [livejournal.com profile] palmetto's fault.

Turning, Turning, Letting Go is Sapphire and Steel being creepy and stuff.

I have no recs because I am the world's slowest and laziest writer :(

But I do want to say I'm totally thrilled you're happy with "Keeps Raining All the Time" because I love it too.

Ooh, you've written SG1? I'll have to have a good look when I get home!

As to recs, I think you've probably seen most of my recent TNG/DS9 stuff on [livejournal.com profile] where_no_woman - but I'm always keen to tell people about Endings and Beginnings, my Troi/Pulaski drabble cycle, even though I don't think it's my best work, because I just think there should be more Pulaski love!

I need to read more of your fic, thanks for posting this!

I wish I wrote adventury, plotty stuff, but usually I only write when I'm bitten by the need to explain something about someone or get someone together, which is funny, because I write stuff I'm not sure I'd read otherwise and then wonder why not so many people read it!

But I have had good things said about my Phantom of the Opera fiction, namely (non-sexy-wise) West of the Moon which is a post-novel character piece between Raoul and Erik and Kissing the Frog, which is one of the first things I wrote and pretty spare but has gotten me the most comments.

My Star Trek RPF is mostly banter and meta, with some slash, and what TOS I have is mostly crack, though Balance uses relationships to try to explain Jim Kirk a little.

Well, this feels a bit weird, but here is my humble recommendation of one of my stories. My html skills leave much to be desired, so suffice to say this is an Eleven genfic featuring Amy, mathematics, and post-Cold Blood angst and it is called Waves.
