Here is a memetastic meme!
Apr. 22nd, 2008 01:22 pmStolen from a bunch of people, in the hopes of giving myself a brief distraction between Dines Compensations and canonical forms!
Name a character that you know I write or have written, and I'll tell you:
a. What initially prompted me to like the character enough to write about him/her.
b. One of his/her best traits.
c. One of his/her worst traits.
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character.
e. The story/thread/chapter/post/paragraph/tag/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character. [I may not be able to find it and exactly reproduce it, but I'll try to remember which story at least...]
f. My plans (if any) to write the character in the near future.

Oh, gosh. Where to start? It's the combination of geekiness, enthusiasm, and determination that gets me every time. To narrow things down - that moment in "Smith and Jones" where she's just in awe of the Earthrise while everyone else is panicking. That's the spot.
b. One of his/her best traits.
From a writerly POV, it's the evolution of her character throughout series three (and beyond...). Lots of range to choose from.
c. One of his/her worst traits.
Again, from a writerly POV and following up on the last bit, it's the spots of inconsistent characterization in canon that can be a little tricky to reconcile. All part of the challenge, though!
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character.
Fairly difficult, mostly because it seems like there are hundreds of people out there with a much stronger grasp of her character than I've got. I look forward to working on that, though! (Also, not having seen the latest series of Torchwood probably puts me at a bit of a disadvantage.)
e. The story/thread/chapter/post/paragraph/tag/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character. [I may not be able to find it and exactly reproduce it, but I'll try to remember which story at least...]
Hrm. I don't really feel like I've done her justice yet, but maybe the end of her section in Five Lives the Master Saved (http://eponymous-rose.livejournal.com/126930.html#cutid1), where the Master's all: "Hey, I just totally made you look bad in front of your supervisor" and Martha just thanks him for saving the guy's life.
f. My plans (if any) to write the character in the near future.
Nothing epic just yet, but I get the impression she might make a cameo or two. :D

Date: 2008-04-22 10:09 pm (UTC)Third Doctor (Again, out of curiosity, I counted - I've written about 20 stories featuring him. Craziness!)
a. What initially prompted me to like the character enough to write about him/her.
I just adore the whole premise behind the Third Doctor's era, exile and all - having our wandering Time Lord landlocked, as it were, absolutely fascinates me.
b. One of his/her best traits.
From a writerly POV, one of my favourite traits is that implication (mostly in series seven) of resentment towards Earth/the Brig/pretty much everything. It's weird to be able to write the Doctor that way. And nice.
c. One of his/her worst traits.
Writerly POV again - er. The gadget thing. I mean, I love a good gadget, but it's so tempting to just deus ex machina one's way out of every corner.
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character.
Jo or SJ-era Three I find much easier to write than Liz-era Three. All the same, I don't really like writing from his POV, because a huge point of his character is the alienness and distance.
e. The story/thread/chapter/post/paragraph/tag/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character. [I may not be able to find it and exactly reproduce it, but I'll try to remember which story at least...]
Hee, looking back I'm finding I tend to use Three mostly as a means of developing his companions' characters. Interesting reversal, that. Maybe the tail end of his section of Higher Education (http://eponymous-rose.livejournal.com/141417.html). I think series-seven Three is generally most honest with the Brigadier.
f. My plans (if any) to write the character in the near future.
Am still on the fence about whether or not he'll pop up in my
Harry Sullivan (I've written five stories for Harry + Deepsky Atlas)
a. What initially prompted me to like the character enough to write about him/her.
Oh, I was crushing on him from day one. Hee! While he's consistently out of his depth, he's extremely adaptable. That's neat.
b. One of his/her best traits.
Writerly perspective, it's being able to write someone who really is a nice guy. I'm not saying there aren't depths, but not getting eaten by angst is a very nice thing.
c. One of his/her worst traits.
Very easy to tend to cliché, or to echo too strongly lines of dialogue from the actual series (a pet peeve of mine that I nevertheless do all the time).
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character.
If I've got his voice in my head, it's pretty straightforward. What do I do otherwise? Otherwise, I make sure I have his voice in my head before I sit down and write, that's what.
e. The story/thread/chapter/post/paragraph/tag/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character. [I may not be able to find it and exactly reproduce it, but I'll try to remember which story at least...]
The end of "L'Autumno" in Le quattro stagioni (http://eponymous-rose.livejournal.com/95067.html), definitely. I like trying to figure out why people wind up leaving the Doctor, and Harry's no exception.

More Deepsky Atlas!

Do I really need to answer this? It's like the writers sat down one morning and said: "I know! Let's make the most inscrutably fascinating and likeable character we can possibly come up with! And make him ridiculously pretty!" (Actually, the reason I actually wound up writing for that fandom is the Napoleon/Illya - slash or gen - relationship.)
b. One of his/her best traits.
Writerly perspective, it's being able to have somebody grump and be petulant and make childish comments and still be absolutely loveable. How does he do it? Also, lots and lots of range to his character. Also also, nerdy. I like writing nerdy.
c. One of his/her worst traits.
He is just a weeensy bit of a Mary Sue (we love you anyway, Illya!). Warning flags pop up in my mind whenever I get too near Mary Sue territory.
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character.
Bantering with Napoleon practically writes itself; anything else can be a bit tricky.
e. The story/thread/chapter/post/paragraph/tag/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character. [I may not be able to find it and exactly reproduce it, but I'll try to remember which story at least...]
Hee, don't think I've managed it just yet. Early/paranoid!Illya came out all right in Glass Threads (http://eponymous-rose.livejournal.com/172120.html), but I do think that aspect of his character is more of a fan creation than anything else. His brief appearance in The Eleventh Hour (http://eponymous-rose.livejournal.com/170366.html) was fun to write!
f. My plans (if any) to write the character in the near future.
Multitudinous. Long genfic coming up!

Spectacular and dramatic reversal of my opinion of the character? That was fun - coming in to series eight for the first time, I had incredibly low expectations. And now she's one of my favourite companions ever! Clearly I had to examine this transformation via the medium of fic.
b. One of his/her best traits.
Writerly perspective, it's the way she humanizes the Doctor. I know, I know, companion's prerogative, right? But Three definitely needs the humanizing.
c. One of his/her worst traits.
Again in terms of writing her - occasionally I feel like I'm overcompensating for the negative opinion of a lot of fandom.
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character.
Fairly easy? As explained above, though, I try to turn off my fannish brain before writing her.
e. The story/thread/chapter/post/paragraph/tag/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character. [I may not be able to find it and exactly reproduce it, but I'll try to remember which story at least...]
I was gonna say her section in For Tomorrow You Might (http://eponymous-rose.livejournal.com/172769.html), but that's a much better indicator of Nine's character, anyway. Maybe the tail end of Argumentum Ad Metam (http://eponymous-rose.livejournal.com/121440.html).

Date: 2008-04-22 10:38 pm (UTC)a. What initially prompted me to like the character enough to write about him/her.
Winning combination of gutsiness, vulnerability, and a lack of fear of being a bit silly. She's marvellous with both of her Doctors!
b. One of his/her best traits.
From a writerly perspective, one of many neat things about her is that she's got such a long (and, on occasion, retconnable) character arc. A bit like the Doctor, where you can write him in nearly any situation, only Sarah's also got things like family and day-to-day life to work with. So much fun!
c. One of his/her worst traits.
In terms of writing her (and this is more a reflection on me than on her character), it's my tendency to use her as a means to develop other characters, if only because she appears alongside so many.
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character.
Not too bad, overall! Always, always fun.
e. The story/thread/chapter/post/paragraph/tag/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character. [I may not be able to find it and exactly reproduce it, but I'll try to remember which story at least...]
I'm most proud of her characterization in Bright Star (http://eponymous-rose.livejournal.com/147298.html), and particularly the section in Old London where she gets to be all Doctorish. Still don't really feel I've managed to get a grasp on her character, though, oddly enough.

Date: 2008-04-22 10:47 pm (UTC)a. What initially prompted me to like the character enough to write about him/her.
Where it all began! I'm a big fan of his era, of the little things that don't quite seem to fit with the later Doctors (Cameca, moments of near-brutality), and the many, many little things that do.
b. One of his/her best traits.
From a writerly perspective, it's the very fact that he's the start of it all, that with enough diligence every little mannerism could be traced forward to one of his future incarnations - butterflies and hurricanes and all.
c. One of his/her worst traits.
Not that it's his fault, but we really don't know how much... he... knows? Er. Let's try that again - it's like there's a huge void where his backstory should be, and it's nigh-on impossible to try and fill that in without contradicting some later form of canon. At least with the subsequent Doctors you can always fall back on their previous incarnations to add depth - with the First Doctor, everything is very immediate and in the moment, so to speak. Not necessarily a bad thing, but can be frustrating.
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character.
Pretty tricky, overall, for all the reasons just mentioned.
e. The story/thread/chapter/post/paragraph/tag/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character. [I may not be able to find it and exactly reproduce it, but I'll try to remember which story at least...]
Definitely haven't managed that yet. Maybe Maelstrom (http://eponymous-rose.livejournal.com/164699.html)?
f. My plans (if any) to write the character in the near future.
None at present, apart from a few shortfic ideas - could well change!
