Her name is Violet.
I stand to the side, observing my friend as he touches, speaks, observes, reduces this woman to a seething colony of wordless revelations. A part of me demands to know how he can expound on the beauty of the flowers, on the goodness of all the small and wonderful things that are unnecessary to our base existence, and yet be so ignorant of matters of the heart.
He looks up, meeting my gaze with a knowing smile; his eyes are cold, but I have known colder.
“A rose,” he says, and smiles, “by any other name.”

Heehee - I know it loses points for originality, but I was sleepy and this seemed easier than squeezing the elaborate charade I'd originally envisioned into a hundred words.
