Doctor Who | Red Pen
Title: Red Pen
Author:
eponymous_rose
Word Count: 400
Rating: G
Characters: Peri Brown, Sixth Doctor
Spoilers: Takes place shortly after "The Twin Dilemma".
There's a market just off the main drag in Rannatori, and Peri figures that since they're not in imminent danger of getting murdered, exterminated, or otherwise deceased, she may as well do a little shopping.
The Doctor affects a look of haughty surprise when she returns to the TARDIS with only one small package, but whatever quip he'd been about to make dies on his lips as she hands it to him.
"Must be your birthday sometime," she says, feeling infinitely stupid now that she's had a chance to think about it, and pushes past him into the TARDIS.
There's a rustling of paper, and she stares resolutely at the TARDIS console; the Doctor is still standing in the doorway. "A pen?" he calls, and his tone isn't mocking, not yet.
"Y-you know," Peri says, and hates the way her voice breaks. "Like on Markanus. We could've avoided that whole mess with the slug monsters if you'd had a pen on hand."
"Oh," says the Doctor, and she hears the rustle of clothing as he adds it to his impossible pockets. "Well."
She glances up, startled to find him still standing in the doorway, frowning at her with an intense sort of concentration, as though he's trying to fathom some unfathomable truth or other.
"You didn't have to," he says at last.
"I think it's maybe safe to assume we'll run into slug monsters again at some point," she notes.
"Maybe," he says, and there's a flicker of a smile as he moves to the console. "I certainly hope not; I've had about all I can take of the bodily secretions of certain gastropod mollusks."
"Urgh," Peri agrees, and can't help grinning
Choose your battles, he'd said, and she's managing it at last.
