The figure, despite the way he blurred into the shadows of the alley, was surprisingly solid.

Martha stumbled back, and the man with whom she’d just collided caught her arm. “Oh, I’m terribly sorry, my dear!”

“Yeah, no problem.” She peered over the man’s shoulder; the Doctor was already out of range of the guttering street lamps, disappearing into the fog.

The bloke was still apologizing, so she waved a hand at him with a reassuring smile and bolted after the Doctor.

Dr. Watson stared after her. And then, drawn as always by the thrill of the impossible, he followed.
