I should probably mention, for the sake of keeping in touch with you spectacularly awesome people, that I've almost entirely moved over to tumblr now, mostly because it's a lot more active at the moment. I'm probably Doing It Wrong, because I still make long text posts over there that are better suited to a medium like this, but I'm finding it strangely easier to connect with folks over there these days. I post a lot of Mass Effect stuff over there, and lately there's been a massive upsurge in Vorkosigan Saga posts as I get sucked into reading the books again, but I try to revisit old fandoms from time to time. I also haven't posted fic back here in ages (although most of it migrates over to AO3 eventually), so if you're big on keeping up with that these days, tumblr's probably your best bet.

If you're over there, feel free to follow and I'll follow back! Just let me know if you've got a different username there, so it doesn't take me four months of awkward half-conversations to realize I've known you for eight years already. Um. Not that I've ever done that.

I'll still try to post here occasionally, but it's (obviously) going to be a lot less frequent!

comments

Orthopedics appointment was awesome--no casts, and even my slings are optional since the bones are actually lined up well and healing is on the right track. Six weeks for a full recovery, but I'm supposed to work on range-of-motion to prevent permanent damage, so I'll be pretty much back to normal pretty quickly.
So as any of you who follow me on other social media probably heard, I managed to crash my bike pretty badly yesterday and broke both arms (aaaand possibly also my right kneecap, still waiting to hear about that). Waiting to find out whether I get two casts or if they'll let me off with one or both arms in soft slings (which is what I have now--if I'm careful, I can type!). Luckily, my parents happened to be in town at the time, so they'll be sticking around and helping out. No word yet on recovery times, although the ER doc suspected more like 3-4 weeks than 6-8 weeks. Hooray for being young and otherwise healthy, I guess?

comments

I'm off in tumblr land pretty consistently these days, so if you're over there and I'm not following you, let me know!

I recently made a post there might be some interest in here--it's a look at the side of rape and sexual assault statistics that we're not often presented with, mostly so I'd have some peer-reviewed journal articles to throw at MRAs whenever they get all up in arms about feminism (which is, let's be real, pretty much anytime they're not hating on someone else) or whenever someone rolls their eyes at the "don't rape people" approach to rape prevention. Trigger warnings for sexual assault/rape apply, and there's a touch of TMI in there. Hoping it'll spark some interesting discussion.

comments

Does anyone know how to view comments on a Google Doc as inline comments, or even as little bubbles along the side of the text like in Word? Hell, I’d settle for some sort of feature like “This comment was made on this page” or “This comment refers to something in the first half of the story”. Throw me a bone, here! I have a very long fic with a whole bunch of fantastic comments from my beta, and the only way I can access them is as a big sequential list, which isn’t terribly helpful for things like “This sentence is redundant” when there’s no way of determining which sentence that comment was placed on.

This seems like pretty basic functionality, so I’ve got to just be missing something, but an hour of googling is still leaving me baffled. Exporting to docx doesn’t keep the comments, either.

comments

I'd like to apologize to all of you on tumblr, because yeah, I'm gonna be spamming this new Mass Effect DLC for a while.

If you're on the fence about it: GET IT. DO IT NOW. If you just buy one piece of DLC for Mass Effect 3, this is it (and I say this as an overenthusiastic Omega fan). It's the most glorious fanservice you can imagine, and it's a perfect, perfect send-off for the trilogy. The rest of the trilogy lets you act the part of the main character of a giant, multi-season space opera. This DLC lets you act out the very best kind of fanfic about all these amazing characters. It's the funniest thing this series has ever done, bar none.

On a side note, the combat was actually pretty awesome - a certain boss battle is the first time I've been seriously tempted to lower the difficulty from the highest level on my Engineer playthrough. Turns out incinerate-spams are so much less fun when you're the target.

The minigames are great. The combat sim is excellent (including the inevitable OH NO SOMEONE TURNED OFF THE SAFETIES moment). Side characters and inside jokes are so plentiful that it may actually take the fandom several weeks to ferret them all out. I played extremely slowly and carefully, and when I went to tumblr, I only recognized about half the dialogue people were giffing there. There is a whole lot of content.

And, well, it has an amazing ending (shocking, right?). Satisfying, well-paced, makes you grin even as you're tearing up. Hits just the right note. What a great series of games.

(The only downside is that I was so wrapped up in playing that I nearly forgot about mebigbang and wound up signing up with a premise I thought up on the spot. WE'LL SEE HOW THIS GOES.)

comments

Please click through, then click on your region for a detailed description of what to expect over the next few days.

It does indeed look like snow will be limited to the higher elevations of Maryland and Virginia.

Inland areas like central/western PA and upstate NY can expect 3-6 inches of rain and winds gusting up to 60 mph. While the drier weather leading up to the storm will reduce the chances of flooding, regions near rivers (e.g., the Susquehanna) should keep a close eye on flood advisories.

Boston is at risk of a coastal storm surge of 3-6 feet, which will very likely result in flooding. Wind gusts of up to 70 mph are possible with this storm.

The DC area is under a flood watch - the storm surge will be lower there, but coastal areas could see some flooding. 5-9 inches of rain are expected in the DC area, so even away from the coast, low-lying areas near creeks and streams could see some basement flooding. Wind gusts of up to 65 mph are expected.

New York City folks, be careful. You are likely to be the hardest-hit city. Storm surges could be up to 10 ft (that is, high tide will be 10 ft higher than usual), so dangerous flooding is going to happen. Waves are likely to be 20 ft higher than usual, which could result in beach erosion and have some permanent effects in the area. Wind gusts of up to 80 mph are likely. Mobile homes will be damaged, high-rise buildings are at risk from flying debris.

If you are in an historically flood-prone area, or if your powerlines are above-ground and prone to outages, stay glued to the news and make sure you have a hand-crank radio or some other means of keeping abreast of the situation. A good rule of thumb is to keep three days of water and non-perishable food items on hand, just in case. Make sure that you have blankets and warm clothing - temperatures in the mid-fifties can feel pretty nasty without power. Keep your pets inside and make sure you have a carrier on hand for them in case you have to leave. Make plans to check in with friends and family who are less mobile (now might be a great time for Granny-who-lives-alone to come stay for a visit).

Please be safe. This is a bad storm, but you know it’s coming, and you know how to prepare. We’ll all get through this.

Send me a PM if you'd like more information about a certain area, and I can try my best to answer.

comments

Don't ask how I noticed that.

Wow. Okay, I'm sure people will still complain about this, and I'm sure a lot of their complaints will be legitimate, but let's face it: the endings to the first two games weren't exactly the height of sense-making cleverness. But they had heart, and now this one does, too. I'm a very happy camper.

<s>So many plotbunnies...</s>

comments
