I'm in that dread frame of mind where I'd love to write but have next to no ideas. I come to you, O flist/circle/random passersby, for help in my time of need!

If you leave me a prompt, a character (or several characters), and a fandom (just one for now - I may do a crossover extravaganza at some point, but it won't be today), I will try to write you something. Knowing me, it'll be gen, rated at or below PG-13. Fandoms? Just to change things up, let's say DS9, TNG, Warehouse 13 and... Middleman.

Thank you! ♥

In honour of finding an 8000-word WIP that I have zero recollection of having written, a meme!

Comment here with absolutely anything to do with my fanfic, positive or negative.

Brutal honesty is fine! Much as I adore writing for the sake of writing, I always try to edit with a critical eye - and I'm always hoping to improve. You can comment anonymously, if you'd rather.
eponymous_rose: (Default)
Having apparently jinxed the free internet thing last time, I've been without internet at home ever since - but now I'm up and running!

In honor of being all settled in and such, I think I might just borrow an awesome project that [livejournal.com profile] kindkit does every now and then (with awesome results - go see!): the ficlet project!

The idea is that I make a post like this one, and the first commenter gives me one fandom (no crossovers on this one), a character or two, and a brief prompt (but please, nothing too specific or detailed). I write a quick little ficlet based on that prompt, and then the first commenter on that one gets to post another prompt. And, of course, even if you're not interested in the previous fic, you're welcome to comment with just a prompt.

Everyone's welcome to play - you don't have to be on my flist or ever have read any of my stuff. If you come across one of these posts and there's no prompt on it yet, jump in! But to give everyone a chance to play, please just limit yourselves to one prompt per round.

My restrictions: I tend not to write above PG-13, and I do prefer gen, but that doesn't mean I won't write any and all pairings - the fic just won't be particularly explicit. Other than that, prompt away! If there's an issue with your prompt, I'll let you know.

I'm limiting this to fandoms I'm most familiar with at the moment, just because this should be quick. If a fandom's not included, it doesn't mean I've fallen out of love with it. It just means I need a rewatch. ;)

Fandoms in no particular order:
Star Trek (TNG, DS9, XI)
Doctor Who (only the newest series with Eleven and Amy, please - I'm planning a Classic Who rewatch soon)
Sherlock (the new BBC mini-series)
Quantum Leap
Stargate SG-1
Legend

And... there we go! First prompt in the comments will be written.
eponymous_rose: (Default)
I've got this urge to write lots and lots of ficlets for DS9, so I thought I'd start by asking you folks for suggestions! Otherwise you might get something concocted from my very own imagination, and that could be scary. I also seem to only have ideas suitable for fics of 20,000 words or more lately, so something shorter would be a relief.

Can't promise to write all of them, but I can promise to write some. Any part of TV canon is A-OK, crossovers with other shows are excellent, Trek or not (keep in mind that my Voyager knowledge is extremely limited at the moment, and I know nothing of Enterprise), and the post-series books are also fair game, though I'm only up to the start of the Mission Gamma books thus far, so please, no spoilers beyond that. I know a bunch of my flist are watching for the first time, so if you don't want spoilers past a certain point, let me know! (And be careful in the comments here.)

So... yes! Prompt me! A couple of characters, a word, a phrase, a bit of poetry, whatever you like, and however many you like. Keep in mind that I'm not likely to write anything rated above PG-13, and gen prompts are more likely to grab my attention than those with pairings.

This has been going around quite a lot, judging by how often it popped up on the [livejournal.com profile] who_daily watchlist today, and who am I to argue with the masses?

Post, in your journal, a rec list singling out the best of your own fics. Tell people why you are especially proud of those particular fics, and of course provide links to them. Yes, that's right, this step involves self-promotion. How else are people supposed to find your fics? List as many or as few as you feel appropriate to represent your body of writing.

Also include a paragraph about the types of fics you most enjoy reading or are most interested in reading in the immediate future -- favorite tropes, pairings, fandoms, whatever. If you're particularly lazy, link to that Dear Writer post you did for whatever holiday exchange comes to mind.

Reply to other rec posts (like for example the one you are reading now) by reccing a fic of your own that might fit the original poster's tastes, or that you'd just really like them to read, because maybe they don't know they'd like it.

I have a ridiculous amount of fanfic hereabouts (148 fics/drabbles stretching over thirteen fandoms and three years), and while I think some of the drabbles have decent ideas going for them, I tried to focus on longer fics here, especially the ones where I jumped out of my comfort zone and tried something new, because those are always my favourites. The list is also skewed toward fics I've written more recently, which I assume is a good thing.

My favourites of my own fics under the cut, in no particular order. Fandoms: Danger Man/The Prisoner, Doctor Who (classic and new), Man from UNCLE, Deep Space Nine, Star Trek XI, and Stargate SG-1 )

And now for the last bit! I've been weirdly picky about fic lately, so I'd love to have some new recs, just for a chance to have something to read. I'm most fond of genfic, or stories in which the romantic relationship isn't the sole focus of the fic - don't get me wrong, I often enjoy het and slash and variations thereupon, but it's not something I'll necessarily seek out unless it's via a rec. I love adventure stories with twisty, turny plots. I love little introspective pieces that have that one moment where your whole perception of the character gets skewed. I love stories that deal with what-ifs. I love fics that don't just wallow in a sameness of feeling, that have the characters evolve and change and grow.

Right now, I'm most into DS9 and TNG fic of all kinds, but particularly awesome recs from any of my previous fandoms - or even for fandoms I'm not at all familiar with - are always welcomed. Hit me with your best shots, flist!

Because the rest of my family is actually standing outside my door, complete with foot-tapping, I'll make this quick: [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis has written four awesome little ficlets, and I really, really have to recommend the Doctor Who/West Wing one at the end most especially, because it is spectacular.

I'd also like to note that I have been in something of a writerly slump lately, and with [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking in the works, I'd really appreciate a bit of a boost. Thus, a meme.

Describe a fic you never would've thought I'd write, and I'll write a scene from it. Fandoms are SG-1, SGA, TOS, Star Trek Reboot, Doctor Who (any era), Corner Gas, Jeeves and Wooster, M*A*S*H, Man from UNCLE, Middleman, Sapphire and Steel, Sherlock Holmes, X-Files (maybe?), The West Wing, crazy random stuff like Macgyver or Legend that I've babbled about but haven't written, any combination of any of the above, and, um, pretty much anything you can think of.
eponymous_rose: (DW | TARDIS | Old School Funky Planet)
Pick a paragraph (or any passage less than 500 words) from any fanfic I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

I can't promise wit or insight, but what I can definitely promise is, um. Words.

Mostly I want other people to post this so I can comment, because I love finding out about how all you talented folks write fanfic.
eponymous_rose: (DW | Two | Fanfic)
Give me one of my own stories, and a timestamp sometime in the future after the end of the story, or sometime in the past before the story started, and I'll write you at least a hundred words of what happened then, whether it's five minutes before the story started or ten years in the future.

Might not appear until after [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking, but ooh! This sounds interesting. It's like fanfic for a fanfic.
eponymous_rose: (SH | Writing)
Not the end of the year yet, but others have been posting, and I am getting antsy. So, even if I wind up posting more fic before the New Year (which I will, since I have at least one fic that's just holding out for a beta, hurrah!), have a meme!

Hey, I did it last year, too!

And, yeah, I was a little more prolific this year. )

And how about you guys? Which fics worked for you? Which didn't? What would you like to see more of in the new year?
eponymous_rose: (SH | Writing)
Okay, you guys - it's the run-up to NaNo, so I guess I'd better get in the habit of churning out those wordy things at a prodigious rate.

Comment with a fandom and a prompt, and I will reply with a 100-word drabble.

Simple prompts, please! I'm not sure how much my brain is up to at the moment. First five comments get a reply for sure. Will try to do more of these before November!

(Eligible fandoms: Doctor Who - New and/or Classic, Man from UNCLE, Middleman, Sapphire and Steel, Sherlock Holmes, The X-Files, Star Trek: TNG (why not?). Any combination of the above. SJA and House are all right, but please don't spoil me for the latest season of either one, as I am scandalously behind on my TV.)

Edit: Brain has fallen asleep. Rest of body to follow shortly. Man, keeping it to 100 words is harder than I remember! Keep the prompts coming; I'll write more tomorrow evening.
eponymous_rose: (DW | Two | Fanfic)
When you see this, post snippets of all your works-in-progress.

(First off, I've gotta put on my hey-you-kids-get-off-my-lawn face, because there are kids. On my lawn. Drinking and smoking and carousing and whatnot. On the plus side, they're all lightweights enough that they're walking into trees, and it's only 11 PM. I anticipate lights-out by midnight. But are those... are those bagpipes I hear on the horizon? Uh-oh.)

Halfhearted grouchiness aside (they do look funny when they bump into trees, after all), a proposition! I would love to try my hand at podfic - that is, recording a fic as a podcast of AWESOME ([livejournal.com profile] flo_nelja, j'ai aimé tant "Eclats de lumière" que je suis bien tentée de la podficcer comme exemplaire de mes, euh, "talents".

The primary obstacle? I am so horribly microphone-shy. Seriously. I babble and babble and then you put a mic in front of my face and I get all wibbly and can't make a sound much louder than a whisper.

So! An exercise to stop my stammering and mumbling.

Voicepost Meme of Doom

Ask me a question - any question! - and I'll reply in a voicepost. Fannish! Nonfannish! Ask me to say your favourite nonsense sentence! Ask me why it takes forever for me to reply to memes! ([livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1, I will someday get to the one you tagged me on! *winks*) Test the limits of my awesome Canadian accent! For bonus marks, ask me to reply in French! (Seriously, do. I don't get to practise nearly enough because nobody speaks it here, and it's been three full years since I was in Immersion and I need to work on my accent liek woah. Also, it'd be amusing!)
eponymous_rose: (Default)
(Apologies for the impromptu hiatus - wound up taking a bit of a holiday from the intarwebs, with the exception of various and sundry fannish requirements. No bad stuff going on! Very good stuff on the whole, spending time with family + cats and reading and playing piano and doing some of that crazy writing thing every now and then. Just needed to take a bit of a step back, apparently.)

First, a quick pimp: [livejournal.com profile] tardis_view has 103 members! That's craziness! For those of you who've not heard me go on about this yet, it's a comm in which you can give people tours of various localities around the world. Thus! Join the community, and you've got a TARDIS of your very own, complete with tour guides wherever you might wind up. There's a gorgeous tour of The Cloisters in NYC, as well as a beautiful log of a trip to Gambia. Come on in and start travelling!

Pimp number two: [livejournal.com profile] livelongnmarry ends at midnight Pacific time, which is in about 10 hours. It's your last chance to buy up all the great stuff around! Last I checked, the comm had raised over $30,000 for marriage equality. SO COOL.

I've offered:
- 5 lots of 1,000,000 NP, the currency in Neopets, which is a guilty pleasure of mine and features about a billion online games, such random things as a stock market and auctions and trading, and some adorable online pets to pamper. For the purpose of comparison, you get... 250 NP? 500? when you create a new account. This is quite a lot more to start out with! So far, four of the lots are going for $20 each, and one is going for $25.

- 1 fic by request, with several fandoms to choose from, including Doctor Who (Classic or New series), House MD, Sherlock Holmes, Man from U.N.C.L.E., Sapphire and Steel, The Prisoner, The West Wing, Danger Man, The Sarah Jane Adventures, The X-Files, or any combination of the above. [livejournal.com profile] elyssadc is awesomely winning this one with a $30 bid. :D

- 10 ficlets by request, in which you give me at least twenty prompts, and I fill at least ten of them over August. Fandoms are the same as the above. [livejournal.com profile] livii is awesomely winning this one with a $20 bid. :D

Last you'll hear of me on that score, until the fics get posted. Go out and bid!

(Also - won the ebay lot of 15 Lord Peter Wimsey novels, which should apparently arrive Friday - Mondayish, which is right smack in the middle of my 7 straight eleven-hour shifts of doom! This is awesome timing, I think.)
eponymous_rose: (DW | Ace | TARDIS)
Unexpected mini-hiatus is unexpected! The problem, apparently, is that I've only got time after work to make one real go at a fic, to get a running start and churn it out before I go to sleep. Usually not a problem! Usually I have the fic all written up in my head (comes of having long stretches of doing absolutely nothing at work), and in this case I've had two days to plan it.

What is the problem, then? The problem is that I've written two-thirds of the fic, am quite happy with the result, but I can't remember how I wanted it to end. And it's fairly important, I think, because it's a vital bit of characterisation and there is symmetry and there needs to be that final third to tie it all together, and I can't for the life of me remember what it is. I think my brain may still be scrambled.

So, with apologies, no fic for tonight - I haven't got time to put something together before bed, and I'm being Very Strict about getting my seven hours lately.

(Times like this I wish I actually wrote fic outlines down instead of relying entirely on memory. That would be the smart thing to do.)

Anyway, random discussion prompt! How do you plan your writing? Better question: do you plan your writing? To what extent?
eponymous_rose: (DW | Four | Romana | But that's crazy ta)
This should be the last, but the return of the daily fics is too well-timed to resist.

For [livejournal.com profile] livelongnmarry, I've offered up some of the daily fics - the idea is that you give me a list of at least 20 prompts (could be wild and wacky or totally dark or with peculiar pairings), and I'll write at least 10 of them over the month of August as my daily fics. You know me - I love getting prompts, but it seems to take me forever to act on any of them. Here's your chance to make me dance like the puppet I am! Ever wanted more exciting Borusa/Frobisher interaction? How about crossovers? Number Six duking it out with the Sixth Doctor? Bidding's started at $5.

(Hush, in another life I was a successful businessperson.)

In other news, the Liz/Barbara fic is Way Too Dark (to the point of being dull) and needs a rewrite, curses. Should make an appearance sometime soon!
eponymous_rose: (Default)
Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] settiai, with a couple modifications because I love tinkering with these things.

What have I been up to the past year? Writing loads of fanfic, that's what. )

Okay, okay, okay. My [livejournal.com profile] livelongnmarry fic isn't going to be finished until December 1st, and I picked such a distant deadline for a reason. Big news:

I am starting the Daily Fics again.

Why? Well, I stopped due to madness going on in real life due to moving and job and exams and all - also because I was feeling a little tapped out. Main reason I quit? Because I allowed myself to get behind, thinking "I'll catch up". Dude, that never works.

Why am I starting again? Because I've got time, because I want to, because reading through all these fics makes me look forward to writing more. I need the motivation, and if I'm not actually capable of writing polished fic, I may as well get awfully good at the rough drafts.

Another reason - if I get the fic written early enough in the day, I think there are enough people on the flist now that I may be able to finagle a quick last-minute beta. ;)

So yes! Fic! Lots of fic! This is exciting. As always, you can leave me a prompt and I'll do my best to fill it sometime in the next century. ;)
eponymous_rose: (SH | Writing)
1. Midnight! I loved it, and the Confidential was extremely fascinating. I adore that kind of stuff. (There, I think that's vague and nonspecific enough to be spoiler-free!)

2. I recognized Ronald Howard (of the 1954 Sherlock Holmes series fame) in an episode of Danger Man, and lo, there was squeeing. My geekiness, I show you it.

3. A million and one congratulations to the folks on my flist who completed [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang! You guys are amazing! (And cookies also to my fellow drop-outs. Maybe next year?) I hope to have long-winded reviews for you all!

4. Projects nearly finished: freaky nonlinear MUNCLE!fic, Liz/Babs apocalypse!fic, drabbles of drabbletasticness

5. Projects almost nearly finished: The Empty Planet (epic SH/DW crossover fic that would've been for [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang, for those of you just tuning in), Five Things MUNCLE!fic (because I am predictable like that)

6. Projects that are distracting me from the above: The One Fic [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_rose Wrote That Stars Captain Jack Harkness (working title, yo), various and sundry other things.
eponymous_rose: (DW | Barbara | Ian)
First off, Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] lizbee! Here in the past, it's still the twelfth for another eighteen minutes, anyway. ;) Hope your day was excellent!

Have been working today on my the first of my crazy Random Pairing Generator fics. And, as is so often the case, the sheer cracktasticness of the prompt means that the fic itself is dark and terribly serious and full of woe. Also, apocalypse. But it is Barbara/Liz! Surely we can forgive some worlds ending for that pairing.

Hey, new layout! It's probably quite temporary, since I'm already fed up with some of the broken bits of it (most notably its stretchiness and strange narrowness and such). I do like the header, though. Balloons! Clock faces! Little dashed lines and things!

Have rekindled my odd obsession with the board game Monopoly, because. Well. It is strangely amusing to have various characters from fandom playing this game. (Fraser keeps losing because he is too nice, I have decided. And Silver cheats. Also, Donna seems to get Park Place and Boardwalk through dice rolls alone every time.) This new habit is not at all strange, no.

In other news, I'm planning on starting up my coin collection again. Yay, coins! Shininess + history = major draw for me. I will need to rescue them from my parents' house, though, and maybe see if I can persuade my brother to part with his collection for a shiny quarter. Anyone else here indulge in numismatics?

And speaking of history, my Mom came across a brilliant old photo album that my Granddad kept during WWII. There are pictures of planes and things, since he was a pilot, but also some amazing aerial views of cities in India and palaces and such. It's really interesting - he never much talked about that part of his life, so I guess it's that old cliché where you feel you know someone better after they died, etc. But not in the Due South way, with the talkative ghosts following you around and building offices in your closet. Er. Yes. Point being that my Dad's going to digitize this collection of photos. They're really amazing.

Tomorrow? Groceries, further fandoming, exercising the knee, and lots and lots of cleaning. Possibly ice cream, too. And after cleaning comes picspam of the apartment, long overdue!

Five straight days of shifts, starting Saturday. Once more unto the etc.
eponymous_rose: (Default)
Because it is my day off, rambling!

1. First off, show of hands - who here gave up on House at some point? Eh? My hands are in the air, both of 'em, because while I stuck with the show until the end of season two (and I did watch season three eventually), I only had a couple moments of love for it after, oh, halfway through season one.

And this would be me, admitting that I was dead wrong to stop watching when I did.

Spoiler-free ramblings about House's season four, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Show Again. )

2. I've just started watching Due South, which is an adorable show that I have been meaning to see for a long time. I could mutter about Canadian stereotypes, but honestly? They've established that everyone north of the 49th finds him just as nutty. Hee.

(Also, heck, I've never been any further north in Canada than, uh, Peace River or possibly Grimshaw. I've never lived in a city with a population under 60,000 (and am currently living in North America's northernmost city with a metropolitan population of more than 1,000,000), so what do I know about the Yukon? Hee. Plus, cute premise, awesome characters, unexpected depths, and it's about how sometimes you really can believe the best in people and get away with it. I think I could really, really like this show. Although if nobody makes a "Dudley Do-Right" joke at some point, I will be sorely disappointed.)

Edit: Okay, joke's been made. I'm satisfied!

3. Now it's time for that meme where you post bits and pieces of your works-in-progress.

Here are some of the highlights I've been working on lately. )

Okay, that's enough of that. I'm giving too much away as it is! But yes. Fic!

4. And here's an offer I've been meaning to make, in the form of a meme, because I write lots of shortfic.

Have you ever read a fanfic that just begged to be expanded, to go beyond the hundred or thousand or ten thousand words into something more substantial? Have you ever come across an intriguing passage in a fanfic that made you want more elaboration, more detail? Well, now's your chance. Dig through my stories and let me know if there's a fic(let), an idea, a character you'd like to see expanded.

The more ideas, the better!
eponymous_rose: (SH | Writing)
Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] flo_nelja!

Ask me a question about one of my stories. It can be absolutely anything in any fic and I will tell you the honest-to-god answer. Don’t hold back.

That makes it sound much more dramatic than it probably will be, but yes. You can ask about any fic, including ones I haven't finished, or mentioned ages ago and never followed up on, etc. Questions about plot/characterization/the process of writing it are fun, too! General writerly questions. It's all good!
