This year, for Yuletide, I wrote mirrorverse longfic! I had very little interest in the mirrorverse until getting my assignment, but after that it was all mirrorverse, all the time, and I had a lot of fun exploring the possibilities. I was also a little worried that a mirrorverse fic (especially one this long) over the holidays might sink like a stone, but I've been overwhelmed at the response - thank you so much! ♥

First, if you're looking for a gift for that special someone for the holiday season, why not consider Christmas in the Delta Quadrant?

Second, we have had a grand total of one day thus far with snow on the ground. It's December! This is Canada! I'm about to ask for my money back, here. (From, uh, Seasonal Refunds, I guess.) Picard will help me out, as always.

Third, it always makes me happy when Alberta uses Trek in its advertisements (we have a town called Vulcan): Alberta boldly going to the grocery store.

Fourth, System 47 is an awesome Trek-related screensaver of awesome.

Fifth, this is my favourite Star Trek/Twin Peaks crossover image ever. What do you mean, it's the only one?

Sixth, this twitter is a bunch of little plot summaries for a made-up eighth season of TNG, and some are quite funny. Some may also have developed into plot bunnies in my head. This is a concerning development.

And this gif makes me adore Jadzia like nobody's business. (This is from "Rejoined", isn't it? Terry Farrell is just all-around amazing in that one.)

Edit: Okay, this interview makes me want to finally sit down and watch Voyager. They look like they're having so much fun!

[livejournal.com profile] agapi42 recced this fic at this week's [livejournal.com profile] ds9_rewatch, and I couldn't go on without linking it here:

Fairy Tales in Deep Space by airandangels (Garak/Bashir, G). It's inspired by that excellent scene in the show where Bashir tells Garak the story of the boy who cried wolf, and Garak promptly reinterprets the moral to mean "never tell the same lie twice". In this fic, Bashir makes it a regular experiment to tell Garak various fairy tales, and have him guess the moral of the story for each. I'm generally not a fan of script format, but it works brilliantly here, and the dialogue is just fantastically funny. Do check it out, if you haven't already!

Random sample of the awesomeness:

JB: In time, the king, too, passed away, and the queen ruled as regent until Snow White should come of age.

EG: Why did he die?

JB: The story doesn't say. It's not important.

EG: It sounds enormously important! Was it a natural death? Had he many enemies?

JB: Look, is the story called 'Political Assassination in Fairyland'? No, it's not.

Doing yet another Mass Effect playthrough (paragon through game one, renegade through game two, which has been entertaining), and I just got to the Shadow Broker mission, which never fails to make me full of happy. And lo and behold, YouTube has the sky car chase scene! Or, as I like to call it, "Shepard and Liara banter awesomely whilst explosions are had". So much love for these two. (I skipped ahead a bit to get to the good part.) The only problem is that the person making the video is a much better driver than I am, so you don't get to hear Liara make comparisons to the Mako. Ahem.

Also, have some pretty Shepard fanart. I love this guy's art - he's done a few other ME characters, and has some cool original art as well.

In other news, I haven't done a plug for [livejournal.com profile] ds9_rewatch in a while: we're still going strong, and we're going to be starting our second rewatch of "Profit and Loss" (2x18) at 9PM Eastern Time (in about forty minutes). If you don't have the episode, they're all up on Netflix, or if you join the community and check the "locked post" tag, you should find what you need. The chat's always a fun time and requires no downloads or fancy browser plugins, and is also 100% free of ads: right here! Hope to see you there. :D

Because I had one of those days that ended in unexpected awesome, I figured I'd try to return the favour. What follows is a bunch of random stuff, grabbed from tumblr (not hotlinked, of course, and with credit, of course, so you can trace it to its awesome, awesome source!). Basically, think of it as a massive reblog. It should be noted that my approach to tumblr, until recently, has been to (a) look at it in abject confusion and (b) be too embarrassed to ask someone how to make the pretty pictures appear on my computer screen. My dramatic discovery of the search box will doubtless make all the history books.

Since there are approximately twenty quadrizillion amazing Doctor Who images on tumblr, I thought I'd stick to some of my smaller fandoms (weighted a little more heavily on the DS9/B5 side of things), give 'em a bit of love. The images are whatever happens to catch my eye in the next hour or so. There may be spoilers. There will definitely be awesome.

(gifs under the cut - dial-up users beware!)

Random fannish picspam, awaaaay! )

Okay, that's probably enough silliness for now. Back to your regularly-scheduled Tuesday. Or Wednesday. Or, if you're a time-traveller, October.

Going off to bed early with a good book in prep for my first exam tomorrow, but before that! Have some awesomeness that has popped up on my flist/radar lately:

Trek-wise:
Secret Agent is an awesome, awesome women-of-Trek vid by [livejournal.com profile] cosmic_llin. All the ladies! ♥ This one makes me want to go back and rewatch allll the series right from the start.

Families is a spectacular look at Kira Nerys and her many different kinds of family post-series, by [livejournal.com profile] sophia_gratia. The whole the-families-you-make vibe is one of my favourite things about DS9, and it comes across so very well here.

Babylon 5-wise:
[Probably NSFW]This super-pretty drawing of Delenn by [livejournal.com profile] rivendellrose! Minbari anatomy! So cool.

And a much older fic (the rec I found was from 2004) I came across quite by accident and have been re-reading ever since: Skuka, Holod i Granit by [livejournal.com profile] mazily. It's Marcus/Ivanova, which really isn't a pairing I'd generally seek out, but my goodness, it has the most perfectly written Ivanova I have ever encountered. The fic is equal parts bleak and darkly hilarious, which is fitting. The daydream sequence is pure gold.

Legend-wise:
Oh and also! [personal profile] curuchamion wrote me Mundane, which is a picture-perfect little Legend fic that all, uh, five of you who have ever watched the series should go check out. ♥
eponymous_rose: (DS9)
Every now and then, I like to wander around ebay and see what awesomeness is to be found, even though I pretty much never buy anything. It's the weirdest window-shopping to be had. Today, I searched for DS9 stuff! I couldn't resist sharing a couple finds:

A bar of, uh, generic-gold-like-metal-pressed latinum. (Quark would be crushed to see it going for only $24.99).

Get this - a collectable card entitled "Garak Has Some Issues". Talk about your understatements. Two comments: 1) said card is spoilery for the episode "Empok Nor", and 2) whatever is happening in this card game, I WOULD LIKE TO PLAY IT.

Yeah, that's it. Oh, wait! You can also buy yourself a Bajoran rank insignia pin, and this snazzy Cardassian pin. And, I don't know, pin them on things. Possibly yourself. Whatever you pin them on will become six kazillion times more awesome, regardless.

Edit: Also, via tumblr, a DS9 finale-spoiling picture (in more ways than one). Gotta love greenscreen. ♥
eponymous_rose: (DS9)
Festivids has gone live! There is a lot of awesomeness there, but I've got one rec I just had to make before plunging back in and exploring some more:

Who Needs Enemies - it's DS9, with a focus on Bashir, Sloan, and Garak. DS9 did a lot of really nifty spy stuff, and this reflects it at its best - it's stylish and menacing and just the right level of paranoid, and it's so well put together. Check it out!
eponymous_rose: (DS9)
What is it with this show and sucking me back into rewatches? It's like my brain goes, "Hey, it's been three weeks! You should totally do a rewatch!"

...okay, not quite. But I do seem to wind up going back to my favorite episodes an awful lot.

Anyway, this whole post is totally just a scam to get you to post your favourite episodes in the comments, so we can squee together, and so I can have more stuff to rewatch. Unless your all-time favourite episode is Profit and Lace, I think we can find some common ground to discuss. ;)

So! What are your favourite DS9 episodes, flist/circle? Favourite characters (there are a billion to choose from)? Favourite plots? Favourite fics? Favourite unintentionally hilarious screencaps? Do tell!
eponymous_rose: (DS9)
I'm in that dread frame of mind where I'd love to write but have next to no ideas. I come to you, O flist/circle/random passersby, for help in my time of need!

If you leave me a prompt, a character (or several characters), and a fandom (just one for now - I may do a crossover extravaganza at some point, but it won't be today), I will try to write you something. Knowing me, it'll be gen, rated at or below PG-13. Fandoms? Just to change things up, let's say DS9, TNG, Warehouse 13 and... Middleman.

Thank you! ♥

[livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking happened! I failed quite a bit at getting stuff written this year - I think only two fics got finished and posted - but I've tried to run around and leave warm wishes in everyone's stockings I could find. ♥

Amazing things appeared in my stocking that I must share with you all, so you can join me in telling these people how awesome they are:

[livejournal.com profile] yamx wrote me an awesome Doctor Who ficlet detailing Amy and Eleven's encounter with a certain figure of historical note.
[livejournal.com profile] merfilly wrote me a pitch-perfect M*A*S*H ficlet featuring Charles and Margaret after the war.
[livejournal.com profile] cosmic_llin wrote me a spectacular Deep Space Nine ficlet that highlights two of my very favourite subjects: Kira Nerys and storms.
[livejournal.com profile] lindenharp made me a Most Excellent icon featuring Team Tardis Version Eleventy.
[livejournal.com profile] taraljc made me an assortment of fantastic TOS!Bones icons that make me want to rewatch the show right this very instant.
[livejournal.com profile] paranoidangel42 wrote me a wonderfully plausible Doctor Who/Stargate SG-1 crossover ficlet, in which Teal'c meets Eleven and awesomeness ensues.
[livejournal.com profile] tree_and_leaf wrote me a fantastic Deep Space Nine missing scene for The Siege, featuring Kira.
[livejournal.com profile] tassoss wrote me a fully-fledged and spectacularly awesome Due South fic in which Ray K. and Fraser are at the Vecchios' for Christmas, and an unexpected guest comes for dinner.
[livejournal.com profile] shinyjenni wrote me a wonderful Doctor Who ficlet in which Martha and Liz talk about the moon, and I am reminded of why I love this show so very much.
[livejournal.com profile] glinda_penguin wrote me a spectacular SG-1 ficlet (with accompanying image), in which Teal'c and Sam are on a road trip in Germany.

And there were many well-wishes that were extremely happy-making. Thank you, everyone, and happy 2011! ♥

On the topic of happy stuff, have a couple amazing Star Trek images I came across on tumblr: cut because I will likely botch the HTML and make them huge the first time )

Yuletide reveal! I was lucky enough to get to write in one of my favourite fandoms this year, for [livejournal.com profile] dress_fic, whose request was awesome and sparked a lot of fun ideas. Beta-wise, many thanks to [personal profile] velvetmouse, who gave several rounds of fantabulous feedback and much-needed corrections - in spite of technical difficulties, no less. ♥

You can read this fic at AO3 as well.

I think it's time for another DS9 picspam/recap! Previous DS9 picspam/recaps include: Civil Defense and An Introduction to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

This time, I went with a particularly cracktastic episode that's all the weirder because it's sandwiched in the middle of season six, which is full of such happy, cheerful, up-the-body-count tales as In the Pale Moonlight and The Sacrifice of Angels and Valiant.

Yes, folks, I'm talking about One Little Ship, the episode that is inexplicably enjoyable despite its silly, silly premise. Picspam and (loving) commentary below is SFW, but probably not safe for dialup.

In which our heroes have a Magic School Bus moment, Worf dabbles in poetry, everyone gets the giggles, and Julian is mostly just there to make bad puns. )
As a bonus: Memory Alpha informs me that this episode was known as "Honey, We Shrunk the Runabout" behind the scenes.

Part of the ficlet project - [livejournal.com profile] tree_and_leaf requested "DS9, Kira, Jake, memories". I hope you enjoy! The first person to leave a comment with a prompt in this post will get their fic written next - check here for my fandoms. We have a prompt! Don't worry; there will be plenty of other opportunities.

Having apparently jinxed the free internet thing last time, I've been without internet at home ever since - but now I'm up and running!

In honor of being all settled in and such, I think I might just borrow an awesome project that [livejournal.com profile] kindkit does every now and then (with awesome results - go see!): the ficlet project!

The idea is that I make a post like this one, and the first commenter gives me one fandom (no crossovers on this one), a character or two, and a brief prompt (but please, nothing too specific or detailed). I write a quick little ficlet based on that prompt, and then the first commenter on that one gets to post another prompt. And, of course, even if you're not interested in the previous fic, you're welcome to comment with just a prompt.

Everyone's welcome to play - you don't have to be on my flist or ever have read any of my stuff. If you come across one of these posts and there's no prompt on it yet, jump in! But to give everyone a chance to play, please just limit yourselves to one prompt per round.

My restrictions: I tend not to write above PG-13, and I do prefer gen, but that doesn't mean I won't write any and all pairings - the fic just won't be particularly explicit. Other than that, prompt away! If there's an issue with your prompt, I'll let you know.

I'm limiting this to fandoms I'm most familiar with at the moment, just because this should be quick. If a fandom's not included, it doesn't mean I've fallen out of love with it. It just means I need a rewatch. ;)

Fandoms in no particular order:
Star Trek (TNG, DS9, XI)
Doctor Who (only the newest series with Eleven and Amy, please - I'm planning a Classic Who rewatch soon)
Sherlock (the new BBC mini-series)
Quantum Leap
Stargate SG-1
Legend

And... there we go! First prompt in the comments will be written.
